 Funny this was brought up.
I recently pulled my never fired 383 HP motor out of my Duster, and noticed the block had a machined pad on the lower side with the cars # stamped in it. It turns out my 383 HP came out of a 69 Road Runner 2 Door Coupe.
It would be nice to at least try to find the owner of the car it belongs to. That is, if it's still around.
At least I could see if he/she was interested in getting it back when/if I someday build my 400 into a stroker.

My last ride "allegedly" had a rod thrown through the side of the block. 440 4 speed dana 70 R/T challenger conv. It got burnt to the ground in a fire, but before that, I would have paid way too much too I am sure.

Like others have said, it would depend on what the original engine size was.  If I had a 340 car with a NOM block, I'd probably pay a fair market value for the correct one or do a trade, if the current owner would be down with that.  I kept the original 318 to my Chally while the 340 will be in there 'cause you never know how much a N-M 318 '73 Challenger may be worth 20-30 years from now.

I already know the previous owner threw a rod with the original block, but I would throw down a couple g's.  If I had the numbers matching block for someone else's car I would sell it to them for the price I paid for the engine.

I bought a large lot of parts from a guy here several years ago, he was leaving town and it all had to go. I got an aftermarket T/A hood, a raisin bran hood, decklid, original T/A manifold with carburetors and enough small parts to fill the entire bed of my truck. He wanted $700.00 for all of it which I glady paid.

There was a 340 block with a 1972 VIN on it, it was included but it had one scored clyinder wall. I asked him what it was out of, and he told me it came from a 1972 Road Runner - yellow with a custom red stripe. He had owned it years before and sold it with another engine in it, but he had not seen the car in years and did not know if it was still in town.

I knew where the car was, it belonged to Joe, a guy I went to school with in the 7 & 8th grade. I stopped by his place on my way home with the parts to ask him about the cars VIN. He was not home but his wife let me in to see it. It matched the block, so I just left it in the garage for him. He called and thanked me when he got home.

My `72 Barracuda only came with a 318 so I might pay up to $200 for the block just to have it with the car.My `70 road runner came with the matching #`s block but I am missing the transmission so I would pay up to $500-800 for the matching #`s case.I don`t have much hope though as I am having a major porblem finding even a correct part# case!  :pullinghair:

I 2nd that cool story indeed  .............

Anyone remember that thread over at moparts a few years back ,,,,,,,,,, this guy located his #matching 440 Sixpack block  ( 70 Cuda) seems the original owner a retired N.Y. state trooper had the engine in his garage it apparently was not being advertised but come how the Cuda owner found out about it and they talked and the Trooper was willing to sell however he want 9,000 dollars ,,,,,,,,, I don't know how that all turned out but imagine that you find you #'s matching block and the owner is a money hungry jerk and wants way way too much........

My JS23VOB is not #'s correct sure wish it was and would pay more for it but I sure hope it doesn't show up with a price tag like 9,000 cause I have would  no choice but to pass...........

I don't think that I am too far out of line in asking $2500 for a numbers matching, mostly complete 383 HP (missing carb, intake and exhaust manifolds, which we kept on the Cuda and he now has) and a 727 automatic transmission....It would greatly raise the value of his car....but if the guy doesn't want it, I will just put it in one of my other cars....I have plenty!

:clueless:  But it isn't even close to being worth that much to anyone. I don't believe even you would buy a 383 for that price if you were looking. If you have plenty of them, I think you should be more reasonable and considerate. Unless he is a guy that has done you wrong in the past and you just can't forgive him for it. :2cents:

I can see both sides of the coin here. Sure no one wants to get gouged on a numbers matching block and trans. The truth of the matter is most of us have limited funds and if it helps to further our own projects its not out of line to ask a reasonable amount for it. If I had a 383-4 car that was missing the drivetrain and someone offered it to me for a couple of grand I would jump at it. No its not worth that to someone else but for me to have my numbers matching drivetrain back it surely would be. It is super duper for someone to do what Barry did for his friend. He got a great deal on a bunch of parts and was able to pass a blessing on to a friend. I would do the same as would most people.

I would pay this much for a mostly complete 383 HP with a transmission for my 70 Cuda to get it back to numbers matching, same with my 71 GTX....But I guess that's just me....Thanx for everyones replies!

Yeah,
I am in the 318 group too. My car sported a smog motor (318) but now has a big block 440.  :burnout: So it's a no brainer for me. No big deal on the original motor. Barry, you are one stand up guy. The kinda friend I'd like to have. Great folks here. Like the anonymous gift Al got in the mail. I couln't think of a more deserving guy!! A lot of great people here. That's what makes this site s awesome. :2thumbs: I will consider it an honor and pleasure and am looking forward to meeting some of you folks face to face at Carlisle!!!
