Changing out clutch and brake pedals

I would like to hear how some of you guys have done this in the past. My car is running and driving so everything is on the car and working.

Did you pull the steering column?
Tell me about your over center spring saga

I installed all of this before, just really hate laying on my back looking up and cramped all the time required to do the job.  Doing this will probably make me sore and limp the rest of the week.  I believe I remember the clever way I got the spring on without prying. I think I undone the support brace 2 bolts that goes throught the firewall with the 2 studs and let the brace relax a bit to just slide the spring right off.

Anyone got a picture of the clutch switch installed? I am putting mine in this time. I think I see where the bolt is already just screwed into the hole.

Al - I have explained this before but here goes for the O/C spring install.

Don't undo anything. Just place the rear spring hook where it should be. Then you will see the front hook has about 3/8 to 1/2" to come forward (towards back of car) to actually go over the lip on the large pin off the pedal. Get some small 10" water pump pliers (trade name Channel Loks) and set them on about the second notch. Grab the spring hook and the edge of the pedal pin and just simply "roll" the spring over the top by squeezing and turning the pliers at the same time. You will be pulling the pliers directly toward the rear of the car. They only go one way and you will see which. The spring should roll on to the pin and just catch on the edge before the pliers slip off. Then simply tap the spring over to the groove on the spring. This is so easy it took about 5 seconds to actually install the spring and no swearing or skinned knuckles either. And about as much effort as what a 4 year old could exert.

Al,

Herb McCandless told me this trick.   Put the short end of the spring in a vise.  Bend it to one side then stick a bunch of washers in the open coils.  Bend it the other way and stick washers in the other side. Now install the spring then start pulling out the washers with vise-grips. Here is a pic of the switch.  I'm glad that you are putting one in , if you didn't have one before. I had to fix my front fender because some d!ldo decided to bypass his switch, then trade his car in.  I went to start the car and I crashed it into my own Challenger!

Thanks for the pictures Rob. I'm half way there. The long shaft is not sliding easy through the pedals. Laying on my side and back under the dash has taken it's toll for today.

After mowing a 1.5 acre yard, hand wenching a pt cruiser on my trailer and delivering it, then fixing the neighbors lawn mower, I have run slap out of energy. I wanted to go cruising tonight , but tomorrow is another day. Or maybe even some late night work. I got the switch for the clutch safety figured out now, and everything is ready, so I am almost done :2thumbs:

Over center spring is installed..... :faint: :woo:  I ended up useing 8 washers. It worked simple enough. Still got time to fire it up :hyper:

The pt was over heated and so I am having the whole engine redone. I didnt want to pull it and install it. Parts and labor under 1700
