hey all... Note from ididit tech guy
Please Please Please dont remove the lock cylinder to change... it is not even remotely the same as Chrysler or Gm.
Make sure you ask plenty of questions about the columns to know the differences before you buy.
The brushed steel column is mild steel and yes it will rust.
yes saginaw steering gear made columns for both GM and Chrysler.. the tilt columns were almost identical. except for the lock key set.

It seems to me it would be almost as easy to use a column out of a Camaro or firebird. The ones from cars in the 1980s are pretty slick looking and cheap.  You would have to mess around with the turnsignal wiring and shim up the firewall mount but I think saving $900 would be worth it...

I thought most of you guys saw my tilt column in my Challenger.  It is a saginaw column from a 78 Cordoba, with a floor mounted shifter. All of the connectors had an adapter harness that converted the wiring to my Mopar harness and it plugged right in.  All the turn signals, ignition functions and even the flashers worked without a rewire. AND it used a Chrysler upside down key that I keyed my doors to.    I had to make an adapter shaft at the bottom to attach it to my coupler shaft.

This is what stops a lot of attempts at using this or GM specific columns. A lot of people out there want a true bolt in, no fab necessary item and are willing to pay extra for that convienance.

Then their "true bolt in, will get them a GM key for their Chrysler car.

floor to dash no mods bolts right in?


The floor plate with the 3 holes had one hole in a different spot, so I had to drill a hole a put a washer and nut behind it.   The dash mount was a little different so I welded a flat plate to the top of it to bolt to the 2 dash support studs.  To adapt the shaft, by the coupler, Both shafts were cut to length, slipped into a tube, then welded at both ends.  very simple

I paid about $20 for the whole column at the junk yard.

They don't show it on their website yet, but my latest Mopar mag has an ad for flaming river Ebody tilt with Mopar keys.

Dog, is there anyway to put a collapsable column and Challenger steering wheel on it, or will it stick out to far?

The tilt column is a smaller diameter than a standard e-body column. About 1" smaller. Tilt columns also take a different wheel adapter than a non-tilt, so I don't think you could bolt it on at all.

Bummer, it looks good though.  I love the Cordobas and diplomat cop cars for parts.  They are a treasure trove if you don't have to be original.

The ididit unit is nice, but way too mucho deniro for me!

All the 70's Mopar tilt coulmns were GM made (Delco division?). I have a couple, but cannot access them (700 miles away in storage at a friend's). I recall everything was different and the switches had special wiring adapters (like what you get from Crutchfield when you buy an aftermarket stereo). Mine all had normal Mopar keys, but I don't recall the orientation.

71/72 Chargers had tilt-columns as an option, but only available as automatic on the column cars!

I found another column for my Cuda by searching Craigslist all over the nation and e-mailing sellers that were selling Cordoba parts.  Got it for $50 without the steering wheel and key assembly, from a guy in Windsor, Canada, who listed in Detroit, MI. The keyswitch is available at Oreilly's for $13.99.   The wiring adapters were there. These allow the wiring to the ignition switch and turn signals to be plugged right into the E-body wiring harness. Here they are marked in RED.  They are out there, you just have to look.
