The problem you have using a material in one section would be where to finish the material off to, the Challenger has a distinct body line running over the roof and any padding would hide this line, the alfoil tape is their to stop the savere sink back of the vinyl over the holes but you still can see where the recesses are on a original car, i know guys who have filled in the area around the rear plug with different products to hide the factory faults, but they are what they are.
Some more SE owners with close up pictures would be great, i still to this day have not seen a puffy vinyl roof on a Challenger or the rear section.
When you guys are at Carlisle next, can you make a point of going up to each SE you see and feeling for a padded roof and then ask the owner if they are near by if the roof has been reskinned or not and if it is in fact padded underneath.   This would help in the conclusion with restorations. :2thumbs:

I have an unusual 71 Challenger SE and I was just wondering if 71 Challenger SE's had the small rear window and the overhead console.

Here are some pictures that might help. SE's also had a piece of SS that went under the trim as seen in this photo (which I have)

Officially their are no SE Challengers built in 71, if you look on your Fender tag you should find the code A78 which is formal roof for 71 and is very rare, Wally has the same optioned car, very worth while to save.

The A78 was an SE without the recognition, and had the small back window and the roof consolette.

Any chance you can post up your tag for decoding please. :2thumbs:

I would but unfortunately when I bought the car there was no fender tag (why did mopar have to use screws on their plates) and the owner had no idea what I was talking about. I am also in the process of a long restoration and I was hoping to find the broadcast sheet but still no luck because it had the wrong bucket seats in it and I have searched all other locations and found nothing :'( But here is my VIN # JH29G1E128940 maybe they made a mistake when they did my VIN

Someone very well did make a mistake on that one. The only model year the LA plant made E-Bodies was 1970, none for the 1971 model year. Can you possibly post a photo of your VIN tag?

Going by your Vin tag your car is a 1970 318 SE Challenger.

Can you post pictures of the upper cowl area on the drivers side next to the vent to see if the numbers match up buddy :2thumbs:

:faint: I hope we're about to reveal another A78 car.... but im thinking this is a 70 with a 71 grille in it. can you also post some pics of your tail panel and maybe even the front fenders with the hood up? I beleive the 70 fenders are not notched out like 71's.....

The numbers on the cowl and radiator support match the numbers on the door VIN sticker and the title to the car has the VIN thats on the dash and its registered as a 1971 Dodge Challenger.
