Does your A78 car have SE door panels with the carpet and reflector?

The numbers on the cowl and radiator support match the numbers on the door VIN sticker and the title to the car has the VIN thats on the dash and its registered as a 1971 Dodge Challenger.

Uh oh....

This is illegal. If you bought the car this way the prior owner or whoever swapped the dash and titled it that way could end up with some jail time.

The most common reason for re-vinning another car is theft.

Email me with as many details as you can and I can ask one of my law enforcement contacts if the '71 body is listed as stolen.

I did buy it this way and the guy I got it from said it was like this when he got it. All I know is that the VIN on the door, cowl, and radiator support match JH23G1B272885 and the VIN on the dash and on the title is JH29G0E128940. The title says its a 1971 and has the 70 VIN so my question is do I have a 71 or a 70?

It appears that you have a 1971 body that someone swapped a 1970 dash and / or VIN tag onto.

As long as the '71 was not stolen, you may be able to get a new state issued VIN tag for it.

Id say from the info, you have a 71 Challenger. Someone, over time, swapped the numbers from an actual 70 SE car, hence the 70 dash, vin, door panels, etc....

It may not be a theft thing, but it sounds awfully suspicious....  :sly:

Well, odds are when he walked up with the title in hand, they didnt look at the car. You could go to the local DMV here while only owning the VIN tag and get it titled if you wanted. I had 2 - 78 DODGE trucks for a while, one was totalled, so i put the other on the road. When i went to sell it, the VIN didnt match the title, I had been driving that truck for 2 years and the numbers on the registration were to the truck that got scrapped....  :misbehaving: woops. Luckily, i went home and found the right title.  :bananasmi

DMV employees do make mistakes.........

I checked your "new guy" thread, the interior photo does show a 1970 dash pad, the '71 pad had a different Challenger logo.

Yeah I noticed that, the whole pad must have been switched.

My Guess would be that someone had a 71 Challenger that was a good car and a wrecked 70 SE and swaped a lot of the parts over to the 71, so they made what they thought was good.  Could possabily be the rear plug from the 70SE aswell as it was an SE to start with. :swaying:

I have a feeling that the original owner wanted a brand new challenger in 71 and wanted an SE so he ordered it with the A78 package and they found a wrecked 70 SE for the rest of the parts to make it into the car they wanted.

one thing you can do is check to see if you have the extra holes for door jam switches. does it have an overhead console? are there headliner bows in it?
