C body Fury 489 case
« on: June 08, 2008 - 01:37:38 AM »
I was at a auto wreckers today and I found a Fury Station wagon there. it had an 8 3/4 diff and right on the side it said 489. 383 2 bbl car it looks like. Axles were gone so I couldn't spin to find out if it was a sure grip.

So it had me wondering...would it be a sure grip? What's it worth?

It had the big brakes on it too. Looked like the wiper motor was the same as an e body also. Anything else I should look for on it that might be worth getting?

Hey TC,

If it was a 70 Fury, you could check the side marker lights aswell. :2thumbs:

Unless the tags are still on it you would need to pull it to tell what gears and s/g or not.The housing and axles(if they were there)are good for narrowing for an a-body.

It's doubt that a 383 2v low compression wagon would have a sure grip. Some of the c bodies did come with them, but most had a 4v and/or duals to back that up.  You never know what the owner may have done though.

I will say that there are all kinds of parts on that car you could get for future jobs. I myself like period correct nuts and bolts, any harness you can snatch up, clips, the a/c bracket and pulley system, The brake system, any power window seats and window motor stuff, fm radio and or speaker wires, that's if you have the time and space. Even the engine and trans would be a good choice.

The A/C system is complete on it. I'm going back right now. Update later with pics.

What year Fury is it.  If it is a 70, even some of the seat belt stuff can be handy. :2thumbs:

I'm not sure. It's a metal grille, smooth, concaved, with little holes.

It's a 71 Fury Tuna Boat with the gull wing spoiler.
It had the same front side markers as an e body. They were gone. It also had the turn signal indicators, gone also.

I was a little late to get the 489 case. It was a 2.76 rear gear peg leg.
2 guys were there pulling it. I bought the big backing plates and it also had 1 good drum with it. Picked up those for 35-40 bucks. My car has the small brakes so I needed them. I also bought 3 original headlights with the retaining rings. those should be the same as my car.

The headlights are original. I hear they're getting hard to find.

Anyone with OEM head lights on their E body?
I'd like to see pics of some from 71 if possible just to compare the lamp cross hair pattern.

I still miss the old family '69 Custom Suburban.  It was a 383-2V but it came with a Sure-grip; my Dad bought it new but it had been special-ordered and the person backed out so it had a few unusual options.

Anyone here do family vacations in these when they were young? I remember many good memories in my uncles Dodge station wagon taking trips during summer.

Yep, all over the place.  Mt. Ranier (before the eruption), Lehman Caves, Wheeler Peak, and a bunch of places in Utah and Arizona.  Although Dad always wished he could have gotten the 4V engine, or better a 440ci, that wagon did the duty for daily driver, vacationmobile, and substitute pickup truck (you could fit 4x8 sheets of plywood in the back with the rear seats folded) until some drunken POS in a chevy POS slammed into the rear and killed it.  Fortunately nobody in the wagon was hurt.

If space and cash ever allow I'd love to pick up another one someday.
