A833 diagnosis
« on: June 09, 2008 - 01:05:50 AM »
hi guys,
i have an A833 in my car (originally a D34 torqueflight car). it's got a few issues, thought i'd quiz you guys on what you reckon could be wrong with it. so i can begin to budget for parts needed.
i plan on getting it rebuilt when i can afford it, hopefully soonish.

it's pretty notchy and rough shifting, i had the shifter rebuilt when i first bought the car, but i think i should have just bought a new shifter.

the main problem is second gear.
synchro is gone, it will shift in ok if the revs are right, but will drop out of gear as soon as you let off the gas.
maybe dog teeth damaged as well? bent shifter fork? the shifter rods seem correctly set up,
although i haven't yet had someone run the shifter through the gears while i watch the rods work the tabs on the gearbox side plate.

the shifter also gets jammed pretty tight sometimes on the 2nd - 3rd shift.
shifter handle rattles when accelerating hard in 3rd.
the gearbox makes a bit of noise too.

i guess it sounds like i need a new shifter as well as a rebuilt gearbox...

also the clutch (which i had rebuilt when i had the shifter done) disengages right at the very start of the pedal travel.
it vibrates all the time too.

what are your thoughts? are these common problems?

cheers,
aaron

For starts, it sounds like you can do quite a bit of external work first.

Are there new roller bearings installed on the clutch pedal to ride on the shaft smooth and tight?
The clutch is obviously adjusted to tight for the pedal to be all the way at the top.
The engine may be lifting from stretching the drivers motor mount when excellerating, binding the linkage through the equalizer bar. You may need to use a tq strap on the drivers side of the engine.

If the side cover on the trans is not raise up and forward a bit when installing the cover, it can cause some hard shifting and also cause it to come out of gears. The cover has to special guide bolts that go on first. Around the bottom rear.

Hows the trans mount? Is the rubber in good shape? Your cross member when bolted, should be all the way up in the holes, then snugged down, then lower the trans and mount on top of it. This helps the 2 linkage rods to have more clearance. You may also need to do a better shifter rod adjustment, was the shifter itself greased while re assembly?
Do you have the inner equalizer mounting stud ball in the right hole on the bell housing? It needs to be level and stay level.
The rod that goes through the firewall needs to not be rubbing the firewall.
Do you have the rubber stop up on top of the clutch stop under the dash?

These are things I would check before I take it all back out. This all needs to be correct to work right.
Even with a new trans and shifter, these things will cause problems.

Mine was doin' the same thing.    Rebuild time.   It wouldn't stay in 2nd.The linkage would bind up every now and then. Was a bent linkage rod. It will probably get worse.      I ended up finding a 5 speed. So far... It's been one of the funnest upgrades I could have done!!   Good luck!!

Mine pops out of second on deceleration also. I checked around, and was told possibly the shift drum, second gear, and or the syncros need replacement. The 1-2 shift fork had been replaced along with all of the bearings previously by a local trans shop but that didn't help.

As for the clutch problem possibly a misalignment of the bellhousing/trans. Correcting that solved a long standing issue with mine.

I would check the external items as Moparal said first though. Good luck, and please post back what you find.

:iagree:    I had problems. The ballstud was ripping out at the frame.2nd gear syncros. were gone, causing it to buck out. And...   only one alignment pin...That one was worn .012!   I replaced both pins with new .050 ones. The new bellhousing fit like a precision instrument!  It was perfect. Now it's way different. No problems.
