Hello From Germany
« on: June 10, 2008 - 07:47:10 AM »
Well, I have posted to a few topics, but figured I would introduce myself here as well.

I bought my car right before I graduated in 1989. Shortly after that, I lost my license in it.  :swear: That is when my journey began. I ripped it all apart and then didn't know where to start. I joined the Air Force and got sent to Alaska. I towed the car up there and worked on it off and on for +/- 6 years. Then it was a move to Texas for another +/- 6 years. I finally got it running again there and got some basic body work and paint shot. It isn't the best looking work, but I had to get it finished to ship it to Korea with me. I got to drive it there for a year. On the way to the port to ship it to Germany, the torque converter let go and I had to get it towed the rest of the way.

Now it is in Germany and running (new converter, rebuild kit, new pump) and legal (mostly - steering column has to go back to stock and 18" or so of silencer louvers welded into the tailpipes to hit 92 dB at half redline rpm of 3K). Now I am working on the interior and trying to get the engine running the best I can. I will be turning to you all for some help here soon on that front.

Body:
1997 Viper Blue
MAS hood scoop that I installed myself. Not bad, but I am getting some discoloration under the paint now
Radiused rear wheelwells. Thought it was a good job until I dug into it. Total hack job that I paid WAY too much for.  :banghead:
New weatherstrip all around
Poly drivers seat and recovered rears - passenger seat still horrible looking stock with bad upholstery (hence the cheap seat cover)

Suspension:
.960 Mopar torsion bars
Poly bushings all around
Converted to manual steering
HD Mopar leaf springs
No sway bars
Dual batteries relocated to trunk

Drivetrain:
1978 440 .30 over (donated from a derelect New Yorker - I think)
Machined to internal balace
1 sleeved cylinder (cracked water jacket)
Forged pistons from PAW with moly rings (couldn't find the exact ones)
452 head with 2.14 and 1.81 valves (no porting) Crower 68340 springs and Mopar adjustable rockers
Mopar Purple 292 cam and lifters (after a failed Crower 32244 cam caused by a lifter)
Schumacher engine mounts and Mancini torque bracket
Edelbrock Torker II intake
Holey 750 Vac secondary (also have a 850 double pumper)
Hooker 5903 headers with 3" exhaust H-pipe and Summit Turbo mufflers
MSD 6AL ignition and Billet distributor
3.55 posi rear in a 8 3/4
Stock axles with 3" studs
Coan 11" Pro/Street (2600-3200) converter (after the failed 9 1/2" GER convertor)
26" radiator with 1 electric fan
440 Source water pump housing with Mopar pump
15" Weld Street Star wheels and BFG tires 275/60 rear 215/70 front
Plus lots more I am sure

Pictures will be added as soon as I figure out how to re-size them here at work

Nice car!  If E bodies stand out here, it must be really fun driving that around in Europe and Korea.
In what part of Germany are you located?  We will be heading there next Monday for a couple of weeks.

FJ5_440: I'm stationed at Ramstein. And yes, i do get my share of looks. In Korea, I was setting off the car alarms when I would drive by - apparently the harmonics for the exhaust were all it took. Had a little  :villagers: when I would start it at 5:30 a.m. to head in to work though

Thankks everyone. I guess the only problem with my car over here is the 3.55 gears. Running on the autobahn at 130 kph (80 mph +/-) is wrapping my 440 to around 3200-3500. Don't like to keep it there for too long. Probably would be fine, but it make me a little nervous. I have been really tempted to swap the 2.73(?) set I have back in. Just never seem to get a round to it.

Greetings! Welcome! Or should I say- Herzlich Wilkommen? I just moved from Germany to the USA - 2 months ago.
When I was there I used my Porsche and Golf G60 as daily drivers.
I was living in Taunus, Hessen but alot of greenie people didnt like my 1970s BMW and Porsche. I wonder what they would have thought if I had a Challenger

As soon as I came here I got hold of my Challenger 440 R/T.
I empathise with your problems, as my car is running a 3.9 rear end, and its noisy above 65-mph. Above 80 mph panels rattle and the car doesnt feel stable. I think I need to change some bushes.
What part of Germany are you in?
