In the mean time, I'm shopping 6X9's
I'm a cheapskate too, I built my 'cuda audio entirely from components I blagged from scrap cars for free. However, the other day I finally had to admit my shelf speakers were not up to the job. So I decided to actually spend money on it.
For value 6x9s I decided to try the JBL GTO series, so I've now got some 3-way JBL GTO-637s in my back shelf.
They're rated at 100W rms, which is easily enough for me - for the money I paid I'm really pleased with them, they have some quite hard bass (I don't have any sub) and they stay clean as loud as I will ever want.
Before I got them I read some good reviews and I have not been disappointed, although I am of course only comparing them to free junk yard speakes (but to be fair my previous speakers were a good make - just a bit too old and small - LOL).
