luggage rack
« on: June 16, 2008 - 06:58:36 PM »
Was hoping someone would be able to answers a few questions for me about the luggage rack on the 70 gran coupe barracuda? 1 were the rear deck lids a one year only thing to accommodate the luggage rack? and 2 were the racks on convertibles the same as hard tops? and 3 how do you know the different between e bodies and other makes and models? last could someone post some pictures of the underside of the rear deck lid to give me a rough ideal to where it was placed? or the exact measurements would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks Rob

If you have the right decklid, some (maybe all, I do not remember for sure) of the mounting holes are pre-punched in the underskin.

I was also going to say that every decklid I have come across has had the holes underneath in the bottom frame showing the location, just needing to be drilled out. Just like hoodpin holes only go in 1 place.

The factory drilled the holes in the trunk lid and then put inserts in the lid so the lugage rack could be screwed to the trunk lid. These inserts look like the ones that were used on the doors to hold the mirrors except that they were larger. The 1970 and 1971 deck lids have openings cut on the backside where the luggage rack attaches.

You have the 72 up lid. You can use it if you don't care about originality on the back side of the lid. You can drill the holes and use nuts behind the screws to hold the rack on.
To answer some of your other questions the rack is the same on hardtops, convertibles, 71 and 72 B-bodies and early 70's Corvettes. I believe 70-72 Vetts. GM and Chrysler bought them from the same supplier.
All 70 & 71 deck lids were made to accept the luggage rack option.

Great visual Thanks  hemiken you're a great help!! Would you  know if the 4 flat washers that rest under the rack/on top of the lid are supposed to be chrome or polished stainless? And last I'm still not sure on what the difference is between the 70/71 trunk lid to the other years? Thought mine was a 70?? Thanks Rob

The washers under the rivet nuts were the tooth lock variety, so I would guess that they were zinc coated, but I do not know that for sure.

If I remember right, the earlier 1970 cars had a deck lid that only had the provisions for the luggage rack.

Then, once the rear spoiler became an option, another decklid was added to the mix.

Once the T/As came into prduction with the ducktail spoiler, they had a deck lid with provisions for all three options.

Every 1971 deck lid I have seen is the same so far, has  provisions for all three.

It changed again for 72, not sure after that...............

Hopefully someone here has photos of all the 1970 types?  :dunno:

there were I think 4 different decklids for the challenger and cuda
1 without spoiler holes
1 with go-wing holes
1 with t/a spoiler holes
1 with the go-wing and t/a spoiler holes

In that image, the bottom left shows Challenger with luggage rack holes.

The bottom right shows provisions for the luggage rack and both spoilers.

So, at least one is missing geneologically speaking.........  :1zhelp:

My new decklid only has the holes for the luggage rack, but my old original 71 decklid had all the holes for everything so I think Barry is right about all 71 decklids having all the holes.

Every 1971 deck lid I have seen is the same so far, has  provisions for all three.
