Odd waterpump
« on: June 17, 2008 - 09:17:31 PM »
I have an odd setup on my 440 in my '74 Challenger. The waterpump inlet is on the passenger side.  :clueless:I've looked in 2 different factory service manuals and it shows it being on the driver's side. The only thing I can figure is the engine originally came out of an R/V. My stock radiator upper hose connection has been moved (and rewelded..quite nicely I might add) from the driver's side to the pass side, which is where it should be for a big block Challenger. I am not sure where the radiator came from. :dunno: It's a down-flow radiator, so having the radiator inlet and outlet on the same side doesn't have much, or any effect (positive or negative) that I can tell, however on an aluminum cross-flow radiator you obviously can't have the inlet and outlet on the same side. I want to switch to an aluminum radiator but can't with the current setup. Does anyone know of any interference issues I might have switching to a waterpump with a inlet on the driver's side. I looked and didn't see any obvious interferences, but just thought I'd ask as there may be something I didn't think of. I think the motor was in a 1978 Dodge (Trailblazer??) R/V. Thanks!! :2thumbs:

Sounds like a motorhome engine to me as well..................

Just swap in a 440 source water pump housing and pump, problem solved :2thumbs:

The RV one you have will make reading the timing a little bit harder aswell.

I beleive all 76-up big block had the water pump inlet on the right side, 74 down on the left.  I actually prefer the later model because it gets the hose out of the way of the oil filter.  Making a cross flow radiator work would only involve getting a different (later model) upper radiator hose.

OK,
So here's a dumb question. Will my 440 big block (made after 1975) accept a water pump housing with a driver's side inlet (made for an earlier year engine block). Will all the bolt holes line up?? Thanks guys!! You rock!! :2thumbs:

Yes the water pump will fit ................ All B engine Mopars share the same basic platform and parts are interchangable, and all RB Mopar engines share the same basic platform and parts are interchangable aswell all external parts are shared between both B and RB Mopar engines with the exception of intakes and internals of blocks, like crank, rods, pistons, maincaps, pushrods etc.  All heads interchange throughout the B-RB Wedge model engines. :2thumbs:
