List of suspension part colors? Anyone?
« on: June 17, 2008 - 09:44:36 PM »
I have searched and found a vague thread of the suspension parts' colors.  I was wondering if anyone had a list of the colors?  I have 1972 Challenger.  Thanks.

There are a couple of threads here with descriptions and pics of people's painted chassis, but they are quite "busy" to read through.  A simple "list" of chassis items and the appropriate "colors" would be GREAT I think; cutting to the chase so to speak     I wonder what is used to preserve the parts that are supposed to be bare metal  :clueless:  I know the lower control arms were coated in cosmoline which is available, but how do we keep the other bare metal parts looking "fresh", is there a good non-glossy clear coat or something??

There's a paint called Metal Mask made by POR 15 that gets a close look to metal.

and use this for application

Thanks for the metal mask tip, Topcat;  I have seen those spray cans before at NAPA too. I thought that POR-15 was too gooey for those, maybe not?

Also if you want to resort just to the rattle can method.

There's a thread on Moparts that I've been trying to find on restoring front ends in the resto column. Was done between March and June. They talked about Krylon battery spray can paint duplicating the cosmolene look. I haven't found it yet. Would like to find it myself. There was some really good tips.

 Search experts anyone?

"Reducer", I am by NO means a paint guy, but is that a fancy name for thinner??  :dunno:  If so, what type of reducer is used, laquer, enamel, good old mineral spirits??

Yeah, I'm more of a rattle can guy  :icon16: , especially for just a few small parts.  Seems a lot of hassle to break out  a spray gun, mixing paint (and CLEAN UP), and all that for that job.  I have a can of Martin Senour cast paint, think that will be ok?

I DO plan to shoot my own engine compartment (with a gun) though then reinstall the front end, do the body work, then let a "pro" shoot the car exterior.

Sound like a good approach?

Thanks for finding that link.  :2thumbs:
The instructions on the metal mask say to use POR 15 solvent for thinning...(translated probably could mean use acetone or laquer thinner for thinning)

The paint is an oil modified polyurethane based. Allow 3-4 days to dry. i remember it took forever for it to dry when I did some parts with it.

If you are interested Mopar Muscle Magazine had a two-part article on removing & restoring a K-member.  Issues was February and March of 2001.

Thanks, sounds great, is it posted at their website?  I went through their online tech articles and found nothing about K-members, is it "hidden" someplace or do we need to search out back issues at a swap meet?
