FC7 metal flake or not?
« on: June 18, 2008 - 10:32:35 PM »
I had a guy tell me today that plum crazy was not metalic paint. I have a project car and although it was original FC7, all the exposed parts are pretty faded but I could swear that I can see metal flake in the paint. I saw a couple of plum cars at a show this last weekend and they seemed to be the right shade and were metalic. What say you paint gurus? This guy swears up and down that the paint is "alkaloid"? WTF is that? He says it is a flat color like FE5, FJ5, Fj6, etc. Is he right or full-o-bull?

You had better tell that guy he is full-o-bull as their are plenty of metallic paints for 70 and Plum Crazy/In-Violet are both in this catagory. :2thumbs:

The folks working my Challenger called me today saying they had my PPG Plum Crazy paint on hand. I have no first hand knowledge of how to read the codes but the info on the label doesn't seem like what I was hoping for. They already have tried to tell me that FC7 in 1970 was not metallic and I shot that false fact down so now i'm a bit :sly:  Here is the info from the label:

DBC 5463 SC

AY112WHP

Dark Plum Pearl Coat

What should the label read?

They say that once the clear coat is applied the color will lighten up some but seeing the word 'Pearl' does not seem kosher. I was shown some on a mixing stick and it just seemed too "candy" looking to me. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just somewhat close to the original shade. These folks mean well; they just haven't dealt with FC7 before.

Am I being too picky? Not picky enough? I'm bit out of my league here so what say any of you who've been down this path?

I am like you, I want the original hue no matter what it takes. I am lucky that the guy doing my car is using RM and they seem to have lots of updated codes. I was sweating if Butterscotch could be had in that system but its there. It is definitely metallic and I would not settle for less than what you want. My worst nightmare is to drive about a year in ignorant bliss only to drive to a big show and find out my color is not original. I have left some of the original color in a couple of places just for the sake of comparison. As popular as Plum is I do not see how it would be a problem to get it right. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

He is giving you the code for a modern color using Pearl. This is not the original plum crazy.
If you need a mix formula let me know. I have posted a mix for this here before, you may find it in a search.

Hmmm, I wonder if could get a plum crazy mix with red instead of blue. IMO plum crazy the color is more of a grape color because of the blue. Plum purple should be more red than blue.

Dave, the mix both you and Neil posted use the identical components. That proper formula has been forwarded to the shop so that their paint supplier can mix a proper batch  :ylsuper:

Br-oooo-ther when I saw 'Pearl' on the label, the needle-skidding-across-a-record sound bite would have been too accurate :scared:

Thanks for preserving my sanity a bit longer
