I am use two filter on mine; a plastic one before the pump and a glass one after the pump.  I never thought about the glass one leaking.  :22yikes: I may have to change it to another plastic one.

I have always used Fram plastic filters as shown in my 1st post.  But as it was pointed out, they could melt, and that is not good.  But I like the double filter idea you're using.  Metal seems to be the safest way to go in my opinion.

 :clueless: Ok, mine is more horizontal than vertical.  How much of an angle are you speaking of?

never heard that one before , even the factory installed them virtically behind the alt off the fuel pump

Should have stated vertically or on an angle, but never horizontally.

 :22yikes:  Looks like I will be going back under the hood to re-arrange the furniture and get that fuel filter in a verticle position.  Always learning something new here.  Thanks for the info!   :thumbsup:

 :clueless:  Air is lighter than fuel. And with a sealed fuel system the air cannot get past the fuel to go into the fuel bowls, the needle and seats would hold the sysytem tight. And in an event of air going past the needle and seat. The bowl vent will vent the fuel out before it drips into the intake. The ecs system also takes it from the bowel and returns it .  I am not convinced on the side mount stuff myself.

A steel filter in the factory position and regular maintenace will go a long ways. Keeping the heat away from the fuel keeps it from boiling and causeing other issues. Unleaded fuel requires a teflon needle and seat or some other compatible type, so the fuel doesnt deteriate the rubber seat and cause other malfunctions leading to impropper diagnosis.  Keep the fuel and intake cold and the engine hot and you have an efficient system when tuned.

  Fuel filters can be installed either way, however you want to install it so the fuel passes over the outside of the filtering element instead of the inside, gives a greater surface area for filtration. In metal ones you have to rely on the arrow or inlet written on the can.  Like wise never heard about installing on an angle.
  Putting a filter before the pump creates a restriction, it only has atmospheric pressure to push fuel through, better to have on the pressure side of pump. We had a problem with a local GM V8 running out of fuel when given a hard time, swapping the filter from before the pump to after fixed this problem.
  In the later Aussie Chrysler Valiants the fuel filters had an extra nipple for returning the fuel back to a point before the fuel pump, this had the advantage of allowing the pump to keep pumping cooler fuel through the pump and not allow the heat of the motor to vaporise the fuel in the pump.   :bigsmile:

I finally decided on a steel fuel filter on my 73 Cuda 340 because of the ethanol/gas mixture that we have to use nowadays. Who knows how well the plastic used in the fuel filters holds up to that stuff? I feel safer with a steel fuel filter.
