Power steering pump pressures
« on: June 20, 2008 - 03:12:31 PM »
I'm in the process of getting everything together to swap a 5.7 hemi into my Cuda, and plan on running power steering. Street & Performance claims that the stock 5.7 pump puts out too much pressure for the Cuda steering box and sells a Chevy pump for around $300 that they say is compatible with the Cuda steering. Since I don't want to spend $300 on a pump if I can avoid it I called a steering pump supplier and checked on the specs for the 5.7 pump and the stock pump for my Cuda. They said the working pressures for the pumps were within about 50 p.s.i. of each other. I would like to see if anyone here doing this swap has dealt with this issue or if anyone has any insight on it. Does anyone know what Chevy pump will work on the 5.7?  :clueless:

Yes the chevy pump will work but I don’t think its necessary to change it over, others have used the 5.7 pump with no problems.
I am using the 5.7 on my 6.1 and went through all that stuff with other people most said run the 5.7 pump. The 6.1 pump puts out a lot more psi so don’t use that one.

Good luck have you started a thred yet on your build?

No, haven't started a thread yet but I will. I'll get some pics to post on the thread too, these digital cameras are the bomb! I haven't started any work yet, I'm kind of held up on the intake manifold. I ordered one from XV Motorsports and a week after they charged my Visa they told me it will be two months before they get any manifolds in stock. I'm not to happy about it, but there's not much I can do about it unless I want to go with dual fours and use the Edelbrock manifold.

All that PSI pressure rating on ST & Perf website is BS. I went through it and had many problems with the p/s pump they sent me.

I took their word on the pump and ordered the "lower" pressure pump and it sucked because it always ran in bypass since it did not displace enough pressure. I eventuallt ended up withe original 6.1 Hemi p/s pump and it works fine now. BTW, i am running a Firm feel Stage 2 box.

If you can,l try sticking with a pump which has the reservoir attached. Less bleeding hassles.

I spoke with Firm Feel which rebuilds these boxes for a living and they said they can handle 1450 psi with no problem since the later vehicles such a '95 Van run the same pressure and steering box.

That would be the 5.7 truck pump.

Well, sounds like I'm good to go. I have the 5.7 truck engine and yes, the reservoir is attached to the pump. That was one of the things I liked about it, nice compact package. I plan on putting the stock power steering box back in the car, I took it out when I put that big honkin 392 in there, but kept it put away. It's sure going to be nice to get power steering and power brakes back in the car. I'm also planning to put an aftermarket A/C system in it later on, the car is a factory non-A/C car. Thanks for the responses guys, it puts me a little more at ease knowing that others have used the stock pump and had good results with it. Every time I buy something else for this swap my wife gives me 'THE LOOK'!  :roflsmiley:
