The one attached to the coil is for noise suppression.  If you had a points-style distributor the ignition condenser should be attached to the distributor if I remember correctly (I replaced the points unit on my '71 with the Direct Connection kit back in '81)

Aha!  Very cool, thanks duodec!

Sorry the car is still acting up, Wally.   :(

you did mention that you fixed wiring at the ballast resistor.  what all does that mean?  tell us how it is wired.

What carburetor is it?

Do you smell gas when it's experiencing the symptom?

Do you have a fuel filter before the fuel pump, after the fuel pump, or both?

If you let it cool down for a while, will it restart and run normally at idle?

I like all the suggestions from others:
- fuel filter
- fuel line route away from heat
- vacuum lines
- check plugs
- check grounds (a burnt ECU?  Eeck!)
- carb float levels
- clean carb (not sure if this has been mentioned yet - Also, don't forget that they sometimes have the little metal screen "filter" right inside there where the fuel line attaches to the carb)

Well, since i "messed" with electical, it may be electrically related?  :thinkerg:

can anyone give any input on the pickup coil in the distributor?  :feedback:

Oh, and theres a new fuel filter before the fuel pump. havent cleaned carb for a while or checked plugs yet.

Wally, a couple of thoughts.
Have a jumper wire handy the next time its acting up & jump from + battery to input side of ballast resistor, see if problem goes away.
Yes  the pickup coil can be bad breaking down with heat.
Why are you running a filter before the pump? This could be creating a restriction. I was even thinking before I read about the filter that you might have a fuel supply hose, before the pump, collapsing when it got hot from pump suction. (a long shot but I have heard of it)

I heard that in 71 the filter swent before the pump, up to 70 is after.......

thats the way its always been, so i wouldnt think it would be the filter. Im running a metal canister. 7/16 lines

I'll post a diagram i used later on........

So, i pulled the distirbutor last night (a new MP distributor a year ago) and noticed that the reluctor was a little ugly compared to what i beleive it should be; not to mention the air gap looks to be slightly larger than the recomended .008" gap.  this could explain why its always been hard to start, and the scarred up reluctor could explain the miss that i cant find. I picked up a new pick up coil, cap & rotor and i have another distributor that has a reluctor in good condition with nice square edges.

I have a document that Chrysler put out on tuning the ignition system that i found on MyMopar.com, i tried posting it but the file is too large.

:chatting: I'll update everyone on what the outcome is this time.  :working:
