Toll booths?
« on: June 21, 2008 - 08:05:00 AM »
We were just looking at mapquest, and it looks like there are many toll booths to go through on the way from the hotel to the show.  Do ya'll have an alternate route or is there no choice but to go through them?

You can hit 'avoid tolls' once you map out something on mapquest.

Yup..... know about that, just wondering what the "frequent flyers" of Carlisle do.  I've had mapquest give some major screwy directions before.  :screwy:

Dangit!!  Just realized where I posted this.  I had 2 windows open and got the wrong one.  Would a mod please move this to the carlisle section.   Thanks.

Are you sure you're looking at that correctly?  I've been through Carlisle many times on 81, and have never seen any toll booths.  Where is your hotel?

Hotel is in New Cumberland.  Mapquest takes us from there to the fairgrounds  I-76 which there is a toll booth getting on that, then off of I-76 onto PA Pike is 2 more toll booths in carlisle.   I was just inquiring to find out if any other roads not many extra miles out of way or too much traffic etc.. like maybe carlisle pike all the way?  If I go up to 581 to 81 it seems to be too much out of the way.  How much are the tolls if anyone is familiar with it?  I'm sure I can just follow the convoy from the CC.com hotel, I was just curious.

Okay.  I just ran a trip on Google Maps, and it actually shows your route up 581 to 81 as a bit shorter.  This is actually from downtown New Cumberland, so if your hotel is closer to 76 it will be a bit longer, but should only be by a mile or two.  However, I know traffic on 81 can be horrendous at times, so the tolls might be worth it in the long run.  Either way, it looks like the distance will be about the same.

There are no tolls on 581 or 81. There is one toll when you exit the turnpike (76). I'd take 581 to 81.

You mean from the hotel to Carlisle?  No tolls at all.

From Cumberland you take 581 (which might require a brief stint on I-83 - check your maps to be sure)  From 581 you can hit route 11 (Carlisle Pike) which runs you straight into the fairgrounds through a thick commercial zone, or you can hit I-81 which runs you to Route 11 a bit further down.  There are no tolls either way.  Do NOT take the turnpike from Cumberland to Carlisle - you'll be in CRAZY traffic, as that's how everyone else will be coming.

Jeff,

My experience is the opposite. The turnpike is fastest, and only a buck or two to travel each way. 581 and taking Rt.11 all the way in is full of traffic lights. Nothing like breathing exhaust fumes from old cars as you sit there.   :eek7: Either way though, you need to aim to get there around 8AM or earlier, especially on Saturday.

Okay, guilty confession - PA Residents don't like the Turnpike.  :)

I sat in traffic for a few minutes Friday morning on the way to the show, but Saturday morning got down 581 to 11 to the Gate with no congestion at all.

Then again I think it was 7:30 even as I was rolling through there.  Early bird gets the worm!
