Before or after
« on: June 21, 2008 - 02:27:48 PM »
Finally getting the Cuda on the street after plugging the emission holes on the new heads. Now the engine is getting warm after I shut it off
and also difficult to start when warm so I guess the timing is either late or early. Is "afterboiling" indicating late or early timing and wich direction
of turning the distributor changes late to early?  :feedback:

Engine is supposed to get hot when you shut it down, there isn't a way i know of around that, except an electric water pump and fan setup that runs after the engine shuts down. Heat soak, take that coolant that was running at 180* being turned by the water pump...and stop it. All that heat from the block dramatically heats up the coolant that is now stuck in the block with no airflow, and no circulation. Your hard hot start may be due to vaporlock/fuel issues as well. But you definately need to get a timing light on it as well if you don't know where it is set.

Thanks! How many degrees at idle? With or without vacuum?  It's a -70 340, a liitle bit unstable at idle with the eddy rpm camshaft and
airgap intake. What's the timing with vacuumadvance and giving throttle?

I would start with around 18* at idle & 36 at 2500 +  rpm . no vacuum advance

Ignition timing might be the issue.....but your difficulty with warm starts may be related to your carburetor leaking fuel into the engine after shut down.  This would cause a "flood" condition which would cause the hard starts after the engine reaches its full operating tempertures.

Well, I can adjust the distributor 1/8 of a turn without any difference in performance. Strange engine.  :clueless:
