Something happened to my transmission or shifter
« on: June 22, 2008 - 12:22:31 PM »
Here's the problem. The last time i took my 73 chally out (about two weeks ago), everything worked fine. Well, i just went outside, started it up, let it warm up, put it in reverse, backed out onto the drive way and let it sit there for a quick wipe down before taking it out for a cruise. I have a b&m prostick slapstick shifter. My tranny is a 3-speed manual valve body.

Well after wiping it down, i put it in reverse and backed off the drive way. When i then pulled it down to 1st gear, i immediately felt this spongyness like it really wasn't in gear but i accelerrated slightly and it took off. It appeared to be in second and not in 1st although it was lined up with the number 1. I knew right then something was wrong and since i was out of gas i needed to get to the station which was close to my house and then bring the car straight back home. As i drove to the station, (through my subdivision) i kept cycling through the gears 2, and drive etc., as well as coming to complete stops at stop signs.

Well when i got to the station and pulled up to the pump, i moved the shifter all the way up past reverse to park, and it was still in gear! I had no park, and no reverse. Obviously, i had to drive straight back home without getting gas. Pulled into the garage and just like at the station have no park or reverse. It wants to roll back out of the garage like it's in neutral but won't start when i turn the key. I have no idea what gear it's currently in or if it's even in neutral. I don't want to let it roll back but just a little because my driveway is sloped

Whats happened here? Tell me this is not my transmission and that it's just some sort of linkage problem. Anyway, advice needed as well as a instructional fix if possible. Thanks in advance mopar guru's

I just had the same thing happen and it turned out to be a melted shifter cable. You mentioned linkage so excuse me if i'm wrong but i would have figured with an after market B&M shifter that the linkage would have been replaced with a cable.

+1 sounds like a shifter cable/linkage issue

I'm sorry, it has a cable coming from the shifter. I'll follow the cable routing later today and see what it looks like. If that's what it is, is it hard to change the cable? What is the procedure and adjustments involved if any.

Not really a difficult job. Just pay close attention to the type of ends the cable has. The end to the tranny is always the same. the end goin to the shifter is what is different. Some get held in with a slid clip and some with a flange and small screw. I had bth from two diffrent shifters. I have a hurst pro shifter now which has the slide clip holding it in. i would pull the cable out first and measure it. then compare the ends to what you see on the pictures for ordering it. I used Summit to order mine. The picures are very good. There are like three different lenghts and two different combinations i think. Just compare it to the pics the vendor posts. There is a little adjusting to hit all the gears properly just follow in install instructions.

No problem. Watch out how you route the cable. I tried a number of ways. Some kinked the cable and other routes got too close to the headers. The one that lasted the longest was the 60inch cable running out the passenger side of the tranny, under and across the bell housing and into the valve body area. Basically wrapped the cable around the tranny. It finally melted. So this time i ordered a 36inch cable and will try a straight shot out the drivers side and into the valve body area. Not sure if it long enough though. Soon find out.

Hey coupe,

When you say "lasted the longest" what kind of time are we talking about here? A few months, 6 months ?

bacardi, what kind of tranny is that. My linkage braket goes under the tranny pan and comes up.

It's a 727, but I forgot to mention that we made a custom bracket so as to get it even further away from the header  :cooldancing:
