Junk Yard Hunting
« on: June 22, 2008 - 09:25:45 PM »
Lately, I've been getting the Junk yard fever.

Today I spotted a 73 D 20 adventurer with a 8 3/4 diff. No tag and the pinion seal was crushed onto it so I couldn't spin it to see if it was a sure grip. Had a real fresh 440 in it. A Shelby Daytona was there, nice body parts, engine was gone. And another Daytona besides.

There's trophies out there. Any good finds lately by anyone?
Let's hear what you found lately digging around parts for your car.

I want to start finding stuff that cross references to E or B bodies. Seems there aren't as many older cars in the Wreckers out here. But I'm sure diffs, drums, and small goodies on other makes and years that can be used on E or B bodies.

Used to hit the bone yards quite often years ago. Seems like all the good stuff is gone now plus the aftermarket has caught up to where you can find just about any part you need.

Around here all the nearby junkyards got driven out by zoning or EPA or taxes; the land is just too "Valuable" and gets retasked for parking lots, strip malls, and overcrowded housing.

There are still yards but the ones i know about are 2+ hours away (each way); I just can't free up that kind of time lately.

Used to go to a place out in the country in Malcolm, NE.    "Walkies"

Place had acres and acres in rolling hills of cars, some old enough they had wooden spoked wheels.  The further back you went the older they got.   restored my 66 olds with all factory parts from 8 other cars in the yard, plus got other trim pieces from other models had I wanted to do anything custom.   I dont think I ever found anything on Ebay for that car while I had it.  Anyway it Was a you-pull-it kind of place.   All kinds of old cars out there and most of the time you were alone.  In the summer the weeds got real tall and you had to watch out for critters hiding in engine compartments.   Once you went over the first hill, it was almost total solitude usually.  Like being in a old graveyard.

Aparently though,  if you dont drain all the fluids from the cars before you haul them out to the hills, the EPA gets concerned about run off and ground water contamination.   Last I heard, every car out there got crushed, hauled away and the place is gone.

These new fangled pick-a-part places in the middle of town, just aint the same

There are also some yards in the high desert - Adelanto, Ridgecrest.  I imagine there's some others out by Mojave, Lancaster and Palmdale.  I haven't visited - too far - but everytime I'd pass the ones on 395, I'd think about it.

Around here, with our proximity to Mexico, the old cars are pretty scarce - they've all been used as Tijuana taxis years ago.  When I last went two months ago, there was a no-rust Duster that would have made a great resto  :sadwavey: , a '73 truck with a 383 (yes, I know - it must have been repowered) an Imperial and several Fifth Avenues and vans.  Everything else was FWD.

I haven't been in one for a couple of years. When I go the wife will also take the day off and go with. She likes scrounging through them also.

There's some strange things you see in them.
I saw one car that looked like it was a sub compact turned into a demolition derby car with stickers and spray paint all over it.  And a Firebird riddled with bullet holes.
