Newb from MS
« on: June 23, 2008 - 11:28:10 PM »
Hi from Mississippi.  I bought a 73 challenger today, and I started looking for a good site for some info on these cars.  I found this site easily, and I knew I had to join.  There is a ton of great info on here.  Thanks for running an excellent site.

I will try to post some pics of my car as soon as I can.  I could not get my photobucket account to upload my pics tonight.

Here is some car info.  It is a '73.  Here is the partial vin: jh23h3b24----.  I bought the car thinking it was just a regular challenger with a 340 that had been replaced with a 440.  When I got the car home and started looking closely at it I found a clutch pedal still in it.  Then I looked at the console and found that it had a large cutout with no shift pattern on it.  I was thinking 4 speed.  Last I checked the fender tag.  It is a 4 speed.  It has the d21 trans code.  I think it is a fairly unusual car.  What do you all think?

Welcome to the site.  You're right - there's a lot of great info, great people and support here.  This is the best forum on the Internet.  :2thumbs:

Seems that if it has a clutch pedal and the correct code, it must be a four-speed.   :poopoke: :smilielol:  Is the trans missing?  I can't speak to rarity - one of our historians will answer that question - but my guess is that it's probably pretty rare.

Welcome, jeepman!

Not sure how rare but 4 speed don't grow on trees!  So it has a 440 now?  Auto or 4 speed?  I assume an auto.  :dunno:
Only number I have is that in 1973 they were all V8 models, 318 and 340, total produced was 27,930 cars.  :dunno:

Would love to see pics!

Thanks guys.  As soon as I can get the pics uploaded I will post.
The car does have a rebuilt 440 now and a rebuilt 727.  It has been sitting for about 2 years and has not been started.  The car is in fairly good shape.
The car was F8 green, but it has been painted yellow.
I posted a complete fender tag listing in the Decoding section of the site. Go look and see what you think.

Welcome to the site and sounds like you picked up a fairly rare 73 Challenger as it is the last year of the 340 and a 4-speed is a big plus.

Thanks for all of the comments.   I'm glad to talk to all of you.

The car needs to be restored, and that is what I am planning on doing.  I want to find all of the previous owners and try to locate the original trans and engine.

Here are some pictures.

You going to stick with the Yellow or go back to the Green?   Nothing wrong with Yellow.

The pictures were taken right after I got it home.  After I unloaded and washed it the car looked very well.  The yellow does look good, but I really like restored original cars.  I will give it some thought.

When I get some spare time I am going to get it running.  The car has not been started in about 2 years.  I am going to put a battery in it tomorrow and see what it will do.
