1972 Satellite - Day 1 SPD project
« on: June 25, 2008 - 08:14:34 AM »
Okay, I've actually decided to start working on the next car.  It is another 72 Satellite that I actually bought in a package deal with the other one I just finished.  This one was supposed to be a parts car for the car I had before that.  Now, I am glad I did not use it as parts.  Turns out it is on e of the first 1972 Satellites built.  It's VIN is 206 and the Scheduled Production Date is July 14th, 1971.  Other than that it is nothing really special.  The body is fairly rust free.  I've had to weld in a passenger lower quarter patch and there is a bunch of dings and such but overall it is very solid.  I initially thought I'd put it up for sale as is but then I decided to repair the beat up driver fender and that lead to me working on the rocker panel and that lead to me working on the quarter panel.  Well, you get the picture.

I've decided to at least finish the body work before I try and sell it although I may go ahead and paint it.  I am really torn on what color to paint it.  Part of me thinks because of it's "uniqueness" of being on e of the first for that model year, I should paiknt it the original GY8 Gold.  THen, part of me thinks for maximum ROI, I should paint it another color and give it a "clone" look.  You know the usual colors, Resale Red, Yellow, or maybe even a shade of Blue like B5.  Then, Plum Crazy pops into my head too.   :clueless:

Maybe I should post a poll...

ANyways, the car is a 318, auto ,bench seat, a/c car that was originally GY8 with a black canopy vinyl and a gold interior.

Here's some pics before I started on it the other day.  I'll post more later tonight.

Hi Gary,

Are you fitting the vinyl roof back on buddy.............. Because these things look really tuff when they are all gloss Black with Satin Black outs and a Black vinyl half roof :2thumbs:  And the gold interior would not look out of place in a Black car :swaying:

I thought about black but, truthfully, I am not sure I can get it perfect enough to paint it black.  I'd have to spend a week or two block sanding it and I don't know if it will be worth all the extra time versus some other color as far as sales $$'s goes.  Also, since the interior is pretty much trash, I am leaning towards changing the color of the interior to black due to parts availability.

If I paint it pink,  my six-year old daughter won't let me sell it!  :roflsmiley:

It would look cool though and could be a good resellable color for a car and with the Balck outs or even White out decals :2thumbs:

My aunt had a '72 Satellite that was brown my dad said.  I'd love to have something like that.  I'd say no matter what color you paint it, that body style only certain people like anyways, so it wont matter as much.  JMO.   :dunno:

My first thought is to leave it gold.  But a gunmetal color keeps jumping in my head - gunmetal gray or gunmetal blue.  Something that tones down the chrome on the front.

Interesting - hadn't thought of that or maybe even a charcoal gray metallic would be cool looking with the black accents...

Just be careful if you do decide on Gunmetal as it is a very un-forgiving color and can come out motly looking.  If you were going to do a grey color i would swing more to the GA4 Winchester Grey keeping a factory color on the car. :2thumbs:

Gold and puke green have no bang for the buck.   :faint:

I salivate every time I see this one, usually once or twice a year.  Not quite the same thing, but the color is just, wow.
