Heater box help...PLEASE!
« on: June 26, 2008 - 09:41:47 PM »
Hey everyone, i'm rebuilding my heater box now and i'm wondering if i should replace the heater core? Mine looks good and seems to be in working order (keep in mind i've never used it or seen it work) Is there a way to test it? I tested the motor and it works great. Also, thanks for the help with the headliner questions, i installed it with no problems! and it looks great

By all means replace the core.   I think I got mine from Advance Auto for about $59.00.. A couple of pics old and new and link to the chapter on my web site showing the rebuild of the box.

You can have it tested, but for the cost of a new one might not be worth it. As luck goes your get your car done and a year latter the core will start leaking. Might not be the most fun thing to change out when you get the car all back together.

I bought a replacement from Year One about 14 years ago (probably the same mfg then available in parts stores; at least it was made in the US).  My original is in excellent shape, but the others are right about the possibility of a failure; its old!

I just wish the newer unit was as well built as the original; its obviously more cheaply constructed, though probably still adequate.

:iagree: Shouldn't cost you more than a few bucks to get it tested.  If it fails you are only out those few bucks, as opposed to $50+ if you buy a new one when you might not have had to.
