Functional Hood Scoops
« on: June 27, 2008 - 02:02:15 AM »
:clueless: Can the hood scoops on a bulge hood for a Cuda be modified to let air into the engine bay?  Would there be anything to gain by doing something like this, if it is even possible.   :dunno:

:iagree: with a steady hand you can even do the cover plates with slots in them for the air to come through.  I will be doing this myself in about two weeks time. :2thumbs:

I would buy a spare set then cut them open so you can save your originals.  I think you would have to cut through the hood also, correct?  As there are no openings once the scoops are removed?

I never could figure why Challengers have removeable block off plate and hood openings and Cuda's don't...  :dunno:  Yeah, I think they would help to get some air under the hood to cool things down.  Challengers, once you remove the block off plates have like a little rain gutter system inplace so a little water from rain or what not won't go into the engine compartment.  I dunno about to rig that up for a Cuda if they don't have those provisions.

In my opinion it will be good for 'cool' air intake. However you won't get any ram/forced air going down the road. Scoops are just too small and too low.

Would make a nice cold air intake however.

I've done it.  Hardest part is the cast scoops. They trash cut-off wheels. Takes a bit to get it nice. Then I slipped mesh in between the hood and scoop. Yes you have to cut the hood too.   After you cut the scoops out,Set them back in and scribe the holes to the hood. I have been making a fiberglass ram air type scoop that goes on the underside of the hood around the air cleaner.Molded from the hood itself.  Even just the holes let alot of heat out.You can see it at a stop.It helps let fresh air into the engine bay too. Let me know if you need pics.

Some where on the site there are sketches/pics of an aluminum 'cover plate' to fit the underside of the hood to create a large box to work with a open top filter , then had the vents cut out.......search for it .........dk

Last I had heard and read, A wind/smoke test was done on the barracuda sport hood. And results showed with the design of the hood, the smoke went right up over the scoops and wasn't good for ram air. I can't remember all the details, but the only thing it helped with was letting heat out when parked. Something about the wind hitting the windshield caused the scoops to be air deficient since they were too low. The challenger scoops were up higher and did show an improvement. You may not want to cut up your hood. Goodies set up he has done seems it would work with better results if made propper for flow and release of extra air

Vaccuum, think vaccuum.  ;)

I modified a 1970 Barracuda hood and made an airbox that fit tight to the hood and it sealed to a custom air cleaner tub with the hood closed.

At idle, you could hear the air being sucked in through the hood scoops.

Not ram air for sure, but much better than hot underhood air.

Hey Alaskan_TA - Do you have any pics of your air cleaner tub? I have been wanting to seal my hood scoop to the air cleaner, but I'm not sure how/where to start. Here is a pic of the scoop I have installed.

Yes I do.

The aircleaner tub started life as a fiberglass reproduction of the T/A sixpak aircleaner. I cut the bottom out and used a flat aluminum plate made to fit the four barrel I had in the car.

The black underhood airbox is from a severely damaged reproduction AAR hood I cut up.

You can see in the first photo that the scoop inserts have had the backs taken out to open them up.

I think it looked awesome the way it was, I had it painted "my way".

It was a blue AAR clone when I got it.
