Weld pro star rims, street legal or not!?
« on: June 29, 2008 - 06:37:57 AM »
I've been asking around in past years. I once hade a great race Duster with WELD Pro-Star rims.
I was always told they were for strip use only.

Now last friday I got a mailing from Summit with these rims offered in all kinds of sizes.

I did not contact Summit with this question: I don't want to because we're not ready to purchase rims yet: Does anyone know if the
rims are street legal? Next Q: on a 72 challenger, stock axle and tub, what backspacing does a 10" rim need?

This is from Summits website on Weld Prostars

The original 5-spoke street and drag racing wheel.
These Weld Pro Star wheels are like no other wheels on the street or strip. They're precision-crafted from cold-forged aluminum, are superior in strength, and are pounds lighter than other brands of aluminum wheels. The wheels are guaranteed tubeless, come with a brilliantly polished finish, and include an aluminum push-through center cap.

Yes Prostars are street legal . Check out 73 challenger_TN  , a member here. He has Prostars on his  Challenger or at least he did last time I saw it.

I just put some Pro Stars on the front of the Beast a couple of weeks ago.  The Summit site and catalog says they ARE street legal, while the rims have a "NOT STREET LEGAL" sticker on the wheels when they come out of the box.  So there ya go---clear as mud...lol    :smilielol:    :smilielol:       :bigshades:

I ran a set of Welds "not street legal" wheels for more than 10 years without a problem from the wheels or from the law.  I did get a little longer wheel studs installed when I ran them.

Come to think of it - the '69 Hemi Dart came with a similar sticker!  "This car is equiped with a 426ci ... for acceleration time trials only..."  Something like that  :angelwings:  Go for it!

What else:
- Wilwood breaks
- K&N (used to I think)
- Black light bulbs in your '68 Charger tail lights  :1zhelp:
- ?

My Challenger does not yet have the proper registration in my country. After finishing restoration I will have to go to authorities who will turn the car upside-down and inside-out. In the departement in which I live they don't like old cars, and don't like big V8 engines. "all guzzlers, just buy a toyota, it's cheaper" This is why I needed to know. After being granted a full registration, of course, no one ever checks again.
I'm hoping for the ralley-rims of cc-member Dutch, (he's not sure to get rid of them yet) these are legal. If he does want to say goodbey, I will take them and have them on the car during the inspection. I like the ralley wheels anyway, so i might use them on the street while burning cheap tyres, and mount the welds for good cruising.

Maybe you could just "rent" the steel wheels and tires while the inspection was occurring?

I geuss so. But we're looking for 295 welds, and I think Dutch's ralley's were 7J. Some more 7 tires ready for dstruction than 10.  :naughty:

Yesterday I promised my son, that the first thing we will do when we   get registration, is to fully burn a set of tyres. Of course I rather spend $ 50 for some well-used set, than $ 250 for the big ones!

PS Do not tell my wife about my plans!

PS2: Dutch, when you read all of this, please feel free to decide what you want with them!

I run prostars on my street driven challenger. I wouldn't be taking any turns hard in them and I wouldn't want to hit any potholes if your running a low profile tire, they tend to warp easily. Also, make sure you torque them down and NEVER GUN THEM. It will warp the crap out of them.  Great for just a cruiser that sees a lot of drag racing though. I used to do inspections at my old shop and not once have I ever failed a car on wheels. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn't know where to start in order to find out if they are legal or not. They should be fine. To the untrained eye, it's just a wheel. You wouldn't really know it's a 'racing' wheel till you picked it up.
