CD/Receiver Mounts
« on: June 30, 2008 - 10:40:49 PM »
I'm planning on getting an in-dash CD/Receiver for my Challenger and am wondering how the unit is mounted in the dash?  Do you need to fab a bracket and if so where does it connect to the dash and the CD unit?  Does anyone have any pics?  Thanks

The AM/FM that was in my Barracuda had a brace.  The brace is still behind the dash but I never bolted it up to the Alpine I installed.  I've never had a problem.  I put it in 12 or 13 years ago.

I never had to make any bracket. My afternarket unit came with a sleeve that fit in the opening. The unit slides into the sleeve. These new afternarket units don't weigh a tone like the original radios, so I don't think you really need a supporting bracket on the back of them.

If you need a support for the rear of the deck just get some plumbers strap and make one. Thats what the audio shops use and it is both flexible and cheap. If you can get the deck sleeve to mount tightly you should not need support for the back of the deck chasis.
Here is a pic of plumbers strap holding a small motor.

I picked up a Pioneer CD Receiver today and it looks like it comes with a mounting sleeve.  :clapping:   Still need to see if the sleeve mounts will attach to the dash frame, but it looks like it's doable.  Thanks for the input guys  :2thumbs:

That's what I used on my CD player (those plumbing straps) and they work OK....still doesn't prevent the CD from skipping when my shift-kit shift hard from 1st to 2nd, but it works for now.  I'll try to get some pics for you.  :picture:

I ran plumbers tape from the factory bracket on the right side of the opening, across the bottom of the sterieo, then over the top of the steering column to the bolt on the left side. I also added an L shaped ridged bracket to the dash bottom to keep it from sliding back.

I'm currently replacing my receiver also and am contimplating installing the heavy old 8-track player that came in the car. It's from the 70's (not original) but the sound is a little weak. What do think of the that Pioneer unit you purchased?

Thats what I like about the Eclipse decks, at least before they sold out a couple of years ago. I have an 8051 and an 8053 and you can kick a cd down the street for hours and it will play skip free.

Ironically, that's what I have...and old Eclipse CD player that's about 15 years old.....if it skips too much, if reads "Info 3" on the display, then spits the CD out......it's a great player though, plays all my mp3's, cdr's, etc. without an issue.....darn thing has outlasted all my other stereo components, except my PPI Art Series amps..... :woohoo:

I haven't got a chance to install it in the car yet, but at Circuit City it sounds really good with the 6"x9" Pioneer 3-way speakers.  The model I bought is pretty basic, but it does have a front aux. input should I need it.  Really, all I need is a CD or good FM station with classic rock to cruise around town   :burnout:

With all the killer radio stations up there you would probably never need the cd player that often.  :burnout:

Same here just an average receiver is what I'm thinking, I usually just listen to the motor whine anyways. One dilemma is I have lived through (and have small collections) of 8-tracks, cassettes, and now CD's. :smokin:

At least the old tapes don't skip when grabbing gears.  :grinno:  However I did have an 8-track that wasn't inserted all the way shoot out of the deck once. :burnout:
