I just changed last week to Rotella T. It had been sitting on the back shelf for about a year though. When did they modify the blend?

I don't put enough miles on to worry about anything exotic.
Valvoline

PLUS...

This is a good thread to clear this up -

I have heard that if you hadn't been running synthetic from the start that you will miss on all of it's potential.
Does anyone know if this is true?
Silly question, and I couldn't even tell you of all the "benefits", but it's best to be informed

I asked a bunch of questions before I starting using synthetic, and here is my understanding:  You can add synthetic to any engine at anytime after running around 3000 miles with conventional oil.  I mean you can add it to a 100,000 mile engine also, but there might be a drawback.  A high mileage engine that has used only conventional oil will get a build up of oil residue around all of its oil seals, and then adding synthetic oil will remove this residue.  If any of the oil seals have cracks in them from age, the new synthetic oil will find those cracks and create a leak.  So, it is recommended to avoid using the synthetic oil on high mileage engines.

I did start using Mobil 1 synthetic oil in my truck at around 40,000 miles and I have not had a leak yet, so I think it really depends more on age than mileage.

I thought I would have seen a bunch of members using Mobil 1?  In our daily drivers we use synthetic blend.  In the cuda Im using 20-50 conventional.  When I get a BB built I will concider going full synthetic but Im leaning towards conventional with a high ZDDP rating.

I use both.

Since I'm not putting lots of mileage on my old cars, I am still working my way through a stack of cases of Kendall GT1 that I bought many years ago. Once it is gone, I will probably go Valvoline or Castrol dino oil and may think about synthetic.

My daily drivers use synthetics since they get more miles on them. I get better gas mileage with the synthetic than the conventional oils, and every little bit helps.

I use Mobil 1 in all of my vehicles and change it about every 5,000 miles which for me is about twice a year as I don't drive much. I'm only five miles from work. Thank goodness due to the price of gas. I don't drive that much in my Mopars. I recently had a discussion with the rep from Comp Cams who said in so many words that if I use synthetic on my new cam that they wouldn't cover it (warranty) if it became damaged. Said it's "too slick" He wasn't talking about the break-in period, but after that. I've heard this argument before and find it hard to believe. Supposedly Harley is of the same opinion. Anybody else heard this argument on synthetic?? My engine builder says synthetic is OK for daily drivers, but may in fact be "too slick" for high performance applications. Sounds screwy?? :clueless: :dunno: I pulled the head from my Chevy S-10 for a gasket replacement at about 120,000 miles. It had been run on Mobil-1 from the git-go and the valve train looked shiny new. No varnish or sludge!! Who knows??

LAA66,
It's been about a year ago, the old Rotella T label had a blue stripe on it and the new stuff has a blue, yellow & gold stripe.
If yours was a year ago or so your OK....

Are we not talking about apples and oranges here?   :dunno:

If you still have an engine built back in the day, then it has wider gaps and tolerances than a modern engine. So synthetic oil might not be a great choice there. I imagine most of us have rebuilt engines though, so as long as what you are useing has zinc(ZDDP), then I think you are fine. I have used synthetic in my Challenger for close to 8 years now.

I use Mobil ! in my little VW diesel simply because dad used it in his 89 Cummins Dodge for over 10 years and over 750,000 miles and it never had a problem besides a water pump gone bad. We both run ours to 3000 miles then change the filter and go another 3000. I have about 160,000 on the TDI. I don't know exactly because my Dad borrowed it while I'm away.
With that said, even with hydraulic roller lifters in the 408, I will be running Valvoline VR1 Racing oil in the 'cuda. It only has it's third batch of oil in her right now since it only has about 10 hours of dyno time. Still on the engine stand waiting for me to get back.

Looks to be the newer container so I guess it's going to need an additive.

Now I'm worried about the tractor engine I just finished that is running Delo 400. It has a solid cam but very little lift or spring pressure though. Would the additive be a good idea in this application also? Thanks for all the information.

I use Mobil 1 and use the 0W-40 oil in the winter months...same that they use for the factory fill in the SRT-8 and Crossfire.

It sure helps the vehicle start easier...not affected by temperature so they don't get thick like molasses in the extreme cold. I can pretty much get thru the whole winter without changing the oil

I also use a Purolator Pure 1 oil filter...has synthetic fibers as opposed to a paper element offers better protection and longer filter life too
