trans not mating up correctly
« on: July 02, 2008 - 06:29:30 PM »
hey guys, this is in a truck with a 383, and im trying to mate up an np435 4 spd tranny. The output yoke spins free until you have the bellhousing about 1/8 to 1/16 inch from the block, and then the yoke starts to get tight, and when they are completely mated, it really takes some balls to turn the yoke. Also it takes a little bit to get them to mate up correctly; the bolts start to get pretty tight at the end, and last but not least the motor is also hard to turn when they are mated up, is there supposed to be any kind of spacer plate in there that i am missing? :clueless:  Any other idears?... Couple more bits a info, it's a small block truck tranny, and the pilot bushin in the crank is out of a 69 dart, i dunno if that makes a difference or not. Apprectiate all the help

with the truck belhousing no spacer is needed , is the back of the crank drilled deep enough ??

the only other possibility that i can think of is dowell misalignment - never seen it that bad tho.
Probably the bushing / pilot hole.

Pretty sure the dowels line up fine, but im not sure about the crank hole, does the truck input shaft have a longer snout that goes into the crank than a car? That would be the only thing that would make sense. Other than pulling the motor out and goin through everything to drill the crank deeper, is there anything I can do? Does anyone make a spacer plate that is say 1/8 or 3/16 inch, and would I run into any big problems if I bought one or made one up. Also maybe have the input shaft machined about 1/4 inch, maybe a hair less?

Probably the bushing / pilot hole.

I would believe this is your prob. Any debris/rust stuck in the back of the crank??  Bushing seated all the way in??

you can trim 1/4" off the nose of the input shaft
