Ok Plug guru's,I need your help -UPDATE- again

Ok, I know my tach dosen't read right.  :screwy: So I moved on to some tuning isses (which I admit I'm  :crying: not good at). I currently have the timing at 8-10 BTC. I changed the vaccum routing on the dist from the port on the side of the carb to the port on the base. (750 DP Holley). Seems to have improved performance .  :grinyes: So now to try readjust the carb... the ol' vaccum gage and tach (SEARS) method. Jumpy tack/and needle on vac gauge. Cap and rotor looked good so I pulled plugs. First pic is left bank front to rear. Second pic is right. Lots of variation in color. # 2 on right bank  :puke:  Give me your  :2cents: please!

 ok so let me get this straight , you have a 750 CFM carb on a 426 Hemi when they cam factory with over 1000 & you are running the new single 4 bbl dual plane intake & from what I can see #5 on the left side & 2&8 on the right side are too lean , the logical explanation here is that 3 of the 4 lean plugs are fed by the 1 plane of the intake indicating that one side of the carb is set too lean & also the manifold has poor distribution or all 4 plugs should be that lean

Chryco, this is what was on it when I bought it. Can you point me in a direction, I figure new plugs??  But what after that?? Oh and THANKS in advance.

ok so it looks like the lower plane is causing the problems which is fed from the right side of the carb , , I would start by evening out the mixture screwws on the left & right side of the carb , make sure they are both out the same # of turns , then maybe pull off the front fuel bowl & make sure the jets are the same on both sides , this will require new gaskets

Will do! I know the jets are thye same because I had that apart last year. But don't remember the size. I will play some this afternoon. And post results later. A thousand thanks!  :worshippy

BTW... should a bigger carb be in my future?? I have no idea what was on her originally.  :dunno:

I wouldn't put a Champion plug in anything but my lawnmower. I don't know how useful it is to look at plugs that old out of a motor that was idling. Racers usually make a full 1/4 mile pass with fresh plugs and then cut the motor clean and pull them out at the end of the track and look at the base of the porcelin with a lighted magnifying glass to check the jetting

X2 I ran those RC12yc plugs and my 499 likes the autolite 3922's alot better... however as soon as i saw the plugs i thought unevenen distribution as well..... good luck    :working:

Way back when I got her I posted that I didn't think she was that fast (being a HEMI car). People thought I was nuts!!!  :grinyes:   I would assume??? .... bigger CFM would really enhance her performance...

So whats the carb recomendation Holley 1000 DP??  :dunno:  Any imputs appriciated on this, remember I'm in the business of taking them apart... tuning/setup wise I don't know  :poopoke: minus the poke part!

Anyway, I got the plugs  changed and reset the mix screws. Now they are all turned out approx 1 1/2 maybe 1 3/4 turns out. Any farther out and I start using idle quality (if you can say that on a HEMI  :clueless: ).

At idle she actually smells a bit rich now. But seems to be better drivability wise. I left the timing where it was.

71 & Stroker,  I have a tendency to agree on Autolites over Champs, but they were in there when I got her. Been a while time wise, but not miles wise.

Have you got any info of what the camshaft is in your Hemi old mate :2thumbs:

Kenny , I'm guessing it's the one it came out of the crate with?? But I have no way of knowing for sure. I do know that someone was in the timing chain cover at one time tho... because I had a front seal leak. When I took it apart I found the front seal was a bit cocked. Put the new seal in (seated correctly) and no leaks! Actually I could swear when I fixed it, that it brought my oil press up a little...  :screwy:

8-10 BTC?  Sounds like you need a lot more initial timing.  This would cause some richness.  The 750 should be fine except for top end/WOT. CP?

So if it is the standard Mopar grind cam for the 426 Hemi crate motor it is listed at 278* and .495/.480 lift hydraulic. I would suggest stepping up or borrow an 850 double pumper to try out. :2thumbs:

If you really want to get a great carb that's tailored to your combination and will need minimal tweaking, you can't do any better than ProSystems and they don't cost that much more than a new Holley. They can also modify yours.

The Edelbrock EPS 800 is another great street carb. We did a back-to-back test on an engine dyno with a pretty well built 440 (big solid cam and ported aluminum heads) and one of those made within 5hp of a 850 DP Holley, but for sure the EPS is alot more streetable and has all the parts available to tune it. My 2 cents.  :2thumbs:

Stepping up is not an issue thats for sure.  :thumbsup: Want to make the right choice the first time tho! Seems the Holley I have is very easy to work on. And parts are available locally so I don't need to call Jegs or Summit. Not familiar with pro-system but MINIMAL tweaking is good for me!!  :grinyes:
