Ok, I made it back into the garage last nite. I started playing more with the MIX screws. I got 2-3 more inches of vaccum out of her, alltho the needle is still a bit "jumpy" . I did the "tape" on the balancer thing... found out my balancer had more than one groove in it.  :clueless: DOH! Anyway brought the idle up seems to be shes past 36* (vac adv disconected). So as I understand it ( :dunno: ) set the dist so she's at 36* (at hi R's) ???  What will this do to the vac I just gained?? This will bring my base timing closer to TDC I'm sure... but her idle never sounded good there.
I'm hoping I make sense here....

Anyway at this point one of my nieghbors came over to jaw w me. (the guy w the 70 Charger) so I had to talk with him!  :grinyes:

Then I look down....... looks like I got a p/s leak by the valve ontop the box..  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

Maybe you should check the mark first if you have more than one. Maybe somebody marked it already for 36*(?)

Pull the #1 plug (and of course the coil wire so it don't start!) and nudge the motor over till you hear compression shooting out just till it stops and then see which mark lines up with the timing tab. Thats the right one. If you've got 36 degrees of mechanical advance somethings wrong with the distributor.

If your mufflers are loud you might not hear it detonate with too much timing. I'd say if you melt the ground strap off the plug(s), back the timing off a bit

Actually there are 3 grooves in this balancer ( :clueless: ) I got it figured out tho . Tonite I'm gonna attempt to get this done once and for all. Of course it's got to be just about the hottest/humidist day of the year here.  :faint: I'll let you (and Chryco) know whats up later.  :2thumbs:

BIG, what part of WI? I was just there for July 4th...lol. I know it was an hour west of Milwaukee.  It sounds like you have a lot of ideas thrown at you, and you are shooting at every target. I agree the original issue was more than likely the idle mix adjustment. I als think a 426" engine with that old cam will have a rich idle. Ask around.. the original Hemis dont idle very clean either. My feeling is it should like less timing, closer to 32-34° total w/o vacuum advance plugged in, with 12-15° initial. Running the vacuum advance (you disconnect it for setting the curve up) will help it. But the curve is off. Once you get the timing curve set, then you set the carb up for it. 750cfm is fine for what you do with your car, and honestly, if you cant get this one to work, a larger one will be more trouble. So take  breath and go have a brat...lol

Where  do you live ?
Wisconsin?

I reside in Bay View which is the part of Milwaukee just north of the burb of Saint Francis.  But people that live here say they live in Bay View not MLWAUKEE altho you probly wont find Bay View on a map. It was a city onto itself about a hundred years ago.

Moper I agree, I have been shooting at ANY target put in front of me. I got myself so off track (not to mention PO!!) it wasn't even funny. But this is an 01 Mopar Performance Crate (be that good or bad).                                      The guys I've talked to aroung here say 33* not 36* just to add to my confusion.

Raptor sent me a bunch of Barry Grant stuff via e-mail last nite. I did alot of reading (some of which was more confusing) because guys who write this stuff presume you already have a LITTLE knowlege. - OVERALL THIS STUFF WAS VERY HELPFULL!

So this morning I was back in the garage again. Took the BG stuff from Raptor with me and started from scratch. Now keep in mind what I stated at the begiing of this post. I'm a parts dealer not a mechanic. A little knowlege is DANGEROUS and I have a little!

Thsi morning I started but playn with the timing again! Now with vac advance off I have her set at 33* which gives me a base of 8-9*

Shes at max advance at 2G's going to 2500 or 3000 makes no difference. Is this good or bad?? I dont even want to start thinking of my dist curve (remember a LITTE knowlege)

Vac advance does work (checked it)

I currently have the primary screws out about a turn and a half/ secondaries about a turn. Its a bazillion times better than what it was the last time I was out there. Reponse seems good. Going up and back a few times on the screws maybe an 1/8 turn at a time did not showme any improvements so I left them. The vacum on my gauge is about the same as the vac in the previous pics. (good or bad??)  I know garage response vs test drive can be 2 different things. And of course it's been a rainy /misty day here, so lets take her out and get sideways NOT! Maybe if it dry's up aroung here I can actually take her for a ride.

:dunno:  :dunno:  :dunno:  :dunno:  :dunno:  :dunno:   :horse: ???

Timing sounds like it's in the ballpark, so leave it alone! Now you know where it should be set at idle.

As for the mixture screws, I always tweak each one. There is no setting, like 1 1/4 turns that works for every carb. Every carb and motor are a little different, so just tweak each screw to get the best lean idle. Screw it clockwise SLOWLY till it starts to run rough, then back it out SLOWLY till it just straightens out. You can go just a tad more to make it richer if you choose. Repeat this all the way around on all 4 screws several times, and only do it when the motors at operating temperature. A cold motor will always want a richer mixture.

That's all there is to it! If you end up with any stumble it's probably in your accelerator pump circuit.

I think you need to shorten the advance curve &  leave the vacuum advance disconnected so you get to approx 16* at idle & 34 total
