Volt Meter Gauge Question

I have a question about my gauge reaction.  I had the ammeter converted to a voltmeter at Redline.  They said that they calibrated it so that the needle should point straight up to 12:00 during normal operation.  When I start the car, the needle stays all the way to the left.  After a short time (5-10 seconds) the needle comes up to where it should be and acts normally.  Is this "dead" needle at startup normal behavior?

No.  The voltage should be there instantly and the gauge should read it instantly.

this is normal as when you start the car you have drained the battery a bit- so when the alt & reg start to charge back into the battery - it will read a bit high until the voltage stablizes and the volt reg will then drop back to where it is normal!
