Which 440 do I have?
« on: July 06, 2008 - 12:17:18 PM »
My '73 Cuda has a 440 transplant.  How do I tell what year engine it is and which 4bbl variant I have?

Thanks

on the side of the block it will have the date cast into it.. On the top pad it will have a letter before the 440  like f440

Finding the casting year is impossible if you have headers. If you have stock exhaust manifolds, you can lay under the car on the passenger's side, and take a look up on the block.

Look and see if it has a VIN pad on the passenger side of the block right above the oil pan rail. If it has one; post the numbers, it will tell the model year and assembly plant of the car (or truck) it came out of.

The pad on top next to the distributor will have letters and numbers there to. let us know what they are

Dont want to steal this thread, but I did was looking for this info myself, and have a question.  On the pad on top, after the f440, there is a maltese cross.  I know it has something to do with being undersized, but what exactly is undersized, and is this good, bad, or what.  I was surprised to find the f, thought mine was out of a motorhome....., now just need to pop a valve cover and check the heads

A Maltese Cross indicates that the crankshaft, either main or rods, were undersize.

I looked all around the distributor and didn't see any numbers...

I did find "UC229901" right where the oil pan meets the block, passenger side and "1.21.70,2536430-5" right below the header, passenger side.

So I'm guessing it's a '70 engine...what do the other numbers mean?

Thanks!

1.21.70 is Jan 21 cast date
UC229901 , is 0C229901 , so it was installed in a 70 car built at the Jefferson plant , serial # 229901
the 2536430 is the casting #& confirms it is a 440

This is first time I have heard of this, can some one explain?  Thanks.

as it says , if the maltese cross is on the pad the crank was undersized from the factory , the the mains or rods would be .001 or .010 undersize & used the matching brg , no down side to this , virtually any rebuild will do this anyway

Thanks for all the help...let's take this one step further:  In my research on 440s http://www.mymopar.com/enginespecs.htm has that in 1970 there were two 440 4bbls made, one with 350 hp and one with 375 hp.  Now what vex's me is that bore, stroke and compression are all the same but the HP and Torque are different at the rpm level which makes sense but my overall question is: If they are different engines, how do you tell the difference?

Thanks,

External signs are usually a TNT, Magnum type designation on a DUAL snorkle air cleaner. The number on the distributor pad will tell you if it is an HP or the 375 horse version. hard to see but once you clean it off it is a lot easier than crawling under a car for casting numbers. The other things that make one version a 350 horse and another a 375 horse are carbs, cam, valve springs, compression ratio, dual point distributor etc.
