Trans slips in revers when setting for awhile?
« on: July 06, 2008 - 10:18:20 PM »
73 340 with 727. When the car sets for a week or so, it slips in reverse and roars until I put in forward. Is this bad, very bad, or horrible? After I drive it
it acts normal.    :-\

I had a '79 Dodge truck 360/727 that always did that for whatever reason. It was like it had a 4,000 stall race vert when it was cold in the morning. The tranny survived 3 motors and was never rebuilt. I guess it's only a horrible problem if you choose to make it one. If it really bothers you that much I suggest parking it so you don't have to back up when it's cold.

My 727 acts the same way. I only drive it once every week or two. She is a little slow in reverse out of the garage, but no problems after that. I ouwldn't worry.  :2cents:

I'm sure that some others will chime in, but start it up and put it in Nuetral for about a minute.  This fills up the converter.

Mine does the exact same thing and I too thought I had a problem. A while ago I read here about that "putting it in neutral, filling th TC" stuff and that works just fine. Now, after startng the car, I let it idle in N for a minute or so and it backs out perfectly. Just my  :2cents: as living proof that method works.

Mines been doing it for the last 20 years, ever since i put a 11 inch tci. The 12 inch converter never did slip.

Just a minute in neutral cures that.
