VANISHING POINT REMAKE

  Not sure if this has come up before, but did you know that there was a remake done in 1996. I was bumming around in a game shop up the street from my house that sold used DVD's and spotted it. It was good. It looks to be a Made for TV movie, but I was suppriesed. It had some mild changes. The movie was set now, It was a little more mild then the original, and some thing where changed, but honestly if you get the chance it was a good watch.

Actually, I just watched that Friday night.   

Maybe it's not as good as the original, but at least it had a plot.

A true MoPar/muscle car/car chase guy wouldn't say it sucks. How can 30 minutes in full of on air screen time of a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T (with a Hemi) be bad? We're lucky to see any MoPars on the big screen. How about "The Beast" vs the Challenger chase scene, yup, that "sucks" too, every movie has that chase, it's "boring" lol. I prefer the original, by a country mile but still enjoy seeing a Challenger R/T blast across the big screen no mater how corny the plot, it's a MoPar!!!

Interesting side note, in the movie 'Terminal Velocity'  Charlie Sheen drives a white '70 Challenger to pay homage to Vanishing Point.  This is because the guy that directed Terminal Velocity dad directed the original Vanishing Point.

Well...not so much, no.

Depends on what you're looking for, I guess. My brother and I sat down to watch Gladiator a while back. We watched the opening, which is a long fight/battle scene, and when that was over he started fast-forwarding; his explanation was "They're just talking here."

On the other hand, I'm a writer with a Master's in English. I appreciate good characterization and an intriguing plot along with the high performance. I enjoy Shakespeare and Ernest Hemingway. I wanted to know what the characters were "just talking" about in Gladiator. And from that point of view the new VP was just so godawfully written, directed and acted that I couldn't finish it.

If you just want to pop some popcorn and watch the Challenger and the Charger then the new version is fine. If you want to be able to enjoy the parts of the movie where there aren't car chases, stick to the original.

Any movie with sweet cars is a good movie. Two Lane Blacktop, Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, even Gone In 60 Seconds and The Fast and The Furious series get  from me

I saw the remake the first(and only) time I went to Carlisle (1996).  The movie was shown on a huge screen.  This was the first time I had ever heard of Vanishing Point, and I really enjoyed it.  I later watched the original and was disappointed with the lack of a plot, but it still had some great racing scenes.

  I haven't seen the remake even though I heard there was one made. The intense plot of the original kept me glued to the big screen, no, really, though I liked the original because it struck a cord with us back then.     Went and saw it many times when it first came out.   
  When you look at the original movie you can see the different cars that they used, especially the camaro that was slammed into the dozers at the end and not the Challenger. Check out the hood flying through the air, no scoops on it, check out the wheel at the end, not a ralley but a silver painted standard wheel and the list goes on. I liked the wardrobe lady in the movie, she was the one riding the bike near the end, seems she forgot to dress herself.      
  I must try and get a copy of the remake anyway to add to my collection of car movies.   
  There was supposed to be 3  440  4spd Challengers and one 383 auto, the auto was the only one in reasonable condition at the end of shooting and it was stolen by a 'lady of the night' and found some distance away. The 383 towed the camaro into the dozers and was used as a camera car.

Good spot! Actually this was almost the case... they had to pour some cold water on that motorbike bench in order to avoid this!

 

Mr Sarafian (the director) commented this on that Vanishing Point DVD release.
