ANYONE INTERESTED IN A GROUP BUY?
« on: July 08, 2008 - 02:10:28 PM »
Spoke with Ron Francis regarding rewiring my barracuda and he is willing to give a discount on a group Mopar Wiring Harness buy for cuda-challenger members. I think if we can get at least 5 members, we can get the discount  :money:
I've been looking at the Painless wiring also...

Ron states:
"The Painless uses a similar GM components that does not fit the factory hole properly and gives you the same antiquated components.  We eliminate all of that with the firewall connector cover and no connections to go bad in the first place. Minimizing connections is important. The Mopar kits actually have more product in them then the GM stuff Painless sells.  We actually address both dealer and factory electronic ignitions and complex starter solenoid system you guys use".

I might be interested, depending on how much harness we're buying and how much it ends up being.

I have been considering both Painless and RF, so I suppose I might be interested.  But I find his comments a little odd.

I'm not sure which 'antiquated components' he is referring to, or what 'more product' means.  But the '...no connections' thing is frightening - Does that mean that the RF kits are hard-wired to the fuse block, rather than terminated wiring connections?  So you cannot easily replace a wire, in the event of failure?
The '...dealer and factory electronic ignitions and complex starter solenoid system' comment is equally baffling.  I am converting my points system to an electronic ignition, which I know is handled in the Painless kit...So what is the difference between these two competing kits in that area?

Calling something 'GM stuff' does not qualify as a legitimate comparison to me.  I cannot find anything in those comments that demonstrates why the RF kit is better.  Maybe there are technical merits to his system, but I could not find it on their webpage or these comments.

Anyway, I'm sure there are a lot of us looking at wiring kits, so I don't think it will be a problem to get a group buy organized.  Thank you for looking into this!   :2thumbs:

The RF kits are terminated at the fuse block & can be removed easily , the Painless ones are not

Spoke with Ron. He is willing to give us 20% off with as few as 5 buys! Pretty decent deal I think...

MOPAR POWERED EXPRESS WIRING      Buy - XP-68  $439.95-20%= $351.96  :money:

COMPLETE WIRING SYSTEM
Wiring for one-wire alternator (external alternators add VR-99). This kit will wire points, aftermarket and electronic (factory or dealer supplied) distributors. It also allows for connecting the Chrysler starter relay for use of the factory transmission-mounted neutral safety switch. Our printed and color-coded HIGH TEMPERATURE fire-resistant wiring is supplied for all circuits, including for the lighting needed for most safety inspections: Hi and Lo beams, indicator lights, brake, turn signal, parking and third brake light. The EXPRESS has been improved over previous models to simplify and speed up installation, facilitated by our famous COLOR CODED INSTRUCTIONS. The kit includes a headlight switch, isolated cooling fan relay with wiring and a unique serial number that allows us to give technical support to you and any subsequent owner.

Our newest custom wiring system is built specifically for your vehicle with all the connectors and wiring necessary to drive it, pass inspection, and be able to add accessories as you see fit, now and in the future. We have included the cooling fan relay & wiring. This is due to the fact that more and more customers are using electric fans. Now you can have everything centrally located for a cleaner installation! We've also added a Multi-Connection Battery Junction Block to reduce the number of wires going to the starter for all those add-ons in your custom application.

*Clear Coated, Polished Stainless Steel Finish
*18 Circuits on 16 Fuses
*4 Select-A-Fuses
*Faster Installation with New Style Terminal Block
*Cooling Fan Relay & Wiring Included
*Only the Best Quality Wire and Terminals
*Proper Size Heavy Wire for Each Circuit
*Handles 100 Amp Alternators
*Serial Number
*Includes the Proper Connectors & Terminals
*Clear, Simple, Color Coded Instructions
*Get the satisfaction of wiring with upgraded components

The Express is a direct replacement for all previous Ron Francis kits. It has a very similar bag structure to the past models. All variations of alternator, distributor and steering column are available. Along with the cooling fan wiring and the Multi-Connection Battery Juntion Block, it has 16 fuses, 4 of them select-a-circuit, for complete flexibility in building it your way. The 3-digit part number series harnesses indicate engine manufacturer. Some foreign applications are available.

Dash ignition and floor dimmer switch users update to new reliable switches. Order RON FRANCIS WIRING Part # SW-37.

If you have an externally regulated alternator we recommend ordering the Voltage Regulator (Order RON FRANCIS WIRING Part # VR-88).

What is the website address?  I may be in for two (73 Duster and 70 Cuda).  I just need to know what is included in the harnesses and what accessories the harnesses can handle.  Also, I may be interested in using an alternator that produces amperage in the 70 - 90 range.

Thanks for arranging this opportunity,

Their main website is: www.ronfrancis.com

The kit that Risko1 has referenced is their XP-68, which has replaced their earlier kits.  (If you look at the website, there are several Mopar kits that seem about the same).

The description says that it '...includes the proper connectors and terminals'.  If ALL of the connectors and terminals are in there, then the price for that kit is definitely right!

I still find it strange that he is knocking the 'GM stuff that Painless sells.'  Below, I have attached pictures of the Ron Francis kits for Ford, GM, and Chrysler applications.  Notice any similarities?  I am not an advocate for either wiring company, but it looks to me like RF sells the same kits for all 3.

Thanks again for looking into this.

Is wiring kit for the entire car - underdash, engine, headllamps, marker lamps and rear lights?  If so, that's a heckuva deal.  The underdash harness for my Pro Street last year set me back WAY more than that.  Toss in the engine harness and headlight harness and I spent about a grand on the Y-1 kits.  Wish I would have thought about it back then.  Would have saved me a ton of money.  Maybe I'll go this route on my latest RR clone project.

Where can you get higher output alternators?  I'd like something closer to the 100 amp range.

Not a bad buy-in, but I'm still a big fan of doing my own wiring.  *shrug*

Viperman,

I was trying to determine whether or not doing my own would be better, but I could not find information on where to get the various colored wires indicated in the schematics or the connectors, especially the ones used in the bulkhead connector, and, more importantly, I do not know the ratings of the wires that I am replacing.

The actual wiring doesn't bother me as I have worked on technical equipment for several years.  If you could supply information it would help me make the decision on which way I want to go.

Thanks,

fantum
