Factory AC and fitting a Hemi
« on: July 09, 2008 - 01:00:28 PM »
I'm very happy with my 440 cu in Challenger, but lets face it, to people like us, we're always planning our next upgrade, whether we're broke or not and whether it be for 2 months time or 5 years time. :working:

Dreams of an all aluminium 528 cu in Hemi, with my own design of cam profile and a Richmond 6 speed/Dana 60-3.23 rear end still fill me with warmth.

Which leads me to my next question:I recently got hold of the owners manuals and workshop manuals and have been doing my own ressearch: I have reason to believe that 426 Hemis and 440 6 pack Challengers didnt come fitted with Air conditioning. Is this correct?
Does that mean, that if and when I ever upgrade my challenger to a Hemi- I will have to ditch my Factory AC? Or is there a way of adapting it? Does it depend on the carburation used?

I don't know a whole lot about it, but it can be done, but the mounting brackets have to be moidified, or new ones fabbed.  I'm sure there is a lot more that would have to go into it, but I will leave that for others to expand on.

I thought I had read a while back that if you use the newer style compressors, they will clear the air cleaners.

Classic Auto Air can hook you up with the Sanden conversion.  Bouchelon (SP) also sells different brackets for the Sandens.
