Street racing 1976 pictures.
« on: July 10, 2008 - 04:09:40 PM »
Seen this on another forum, really nice pics from back in the day.

Quote
"1975 on a section of old highway between Osoyoos and Keremeos BC. A bunch of guys got together and made arrangements with local authorities to close it off a few times that summer for drag racing. Word got around and it was pretty well attended. Cars from the southern interior of BC, and a few Okanagan County, Washington cars ran there. No timing equipment at first, but a good time was had by all. I did relief flag starting duties, but mostly took photos. I did run my 4 spd W31 there for the one time it was open in 1976. It shut down after it was determined that the insurance that they had wasn't worth the paper it was printed on.
The local RCMP constable fully supported this as well. You'll see his police car in the background of a couple of the photos. (454 Biscayne ) Of course there was an ambulance and tow truck there too.
OK, this first photo shows the mayor of Keremeos and his 65 GTO running against the local Super Value owners El Camino."

The town I lived in in MA.had a dead end road where the water treatment plant was and you had to cross train tracks ---so we would start racing once the train started to pass, that way we knew no one could access the road till the train passed.
Hey guys scroll down farther into that thread and you'll find some videos posted on youtube that are really cool

Those pics are so cool. Even though I was just a kid in the mid 70's the memories flood back when you see old pics like those.

:worshippy  Those pics brought back lots of memories and a sentimental tear to my eyes.  :grinyes:

Speaking of MA moparclown, it reminded me of of when I was a teen I used to go with a buddy in his V8 Mustang II Cobra (Think Charlie's Angels car exactly) down to the Westgate Mall in Brockton on the weekends for street racing.  Ever go?  It was well organized for an "illegal" event.  They used to use the lights in front of the mall to race and had 3 cars in back of the cars racing to hold off traffic/police cars.  The fastest car rumored there was '70 Nova called "Pyromania" (written on the side of the car, funny car style) with flames and a built 454/velocity stack.  I think the next fastest car was a '76 Trans Am with a 428ci engine from an early 60's Catalina.
