Stock suspension location with Big wheels pics
« on: July 12, 2008 - 11:22:45 AM »
Hey guys/gals I knwo this is a touchy topic on here  but Im gonna give it a go.... Could you all post some pics of cars with oversize wheels 17-20 inches. I plan on putting them on my car however my car has stock suspension. I would like to go with 20's and 19's or 19's and 18's I dont plan on cutting or relocating anything. I would like to see the stance of some of your cars with big wheels. The only ones that are easy to get pics of are the $175000 Joe Rogan cuda or other cars that have been modified to the hilt. PLease state the wheel size and tire size if you would be so kind..... thanks yall

17x8 255/45/17 4.5"bs
28x9 295/45/18 5.9"bs, 7/16" spacers, 3" studs

Stock suspension. In my opinion its VERY difficult to get the 'right look' with anything bigger than 18s on stock suspension. You just lose too much tire height. If you went with a larger wheel/short tire you would have to drop your suspension 2" atleast to get it to not look like a wagon, even that is probably cutting it close. Tire height is the biggest concern when going with a larger wheel, muscle cars just need some sidewall at stock height. The rear tires on mine are 28.5" tall, still 1/2" taller than the common 275/60/15 most of these cars run.

These are 19/20s with full air ride suspension with no air pressure (on the bump stops up front)

just get a b body rear end and the perches are already were they need to be.... then just bolt in a 3/4 relo kit ...  easiest big tire trick made... :working:

I thought I read that the MP XHD's did not change the ride height.  There is an outfit that sells special front hangers for lowering so this might help.  Has anyone had suspension or chassis problems with 17 or 18" wheels?  The car was obviously not designed to take the stresses of performance driving with these low profile tires.

Most everyone complains the xhd are too low, so I used them as a cheap alternative to lowering springs.LOL

What stresses are those compared to a 60 or 50 series tire?

The factory alignment specs weren't designed for radial tires, but those can be altered. The suspension its self is more than up to the task.

More loading is transmitted to the structure of the car.  Lower profile tires do not absorb as much shock as higher profile tires.  Perhaps 45 series will be okay as they are not that different than 50's..  We'll see if any weak points become apparent when guys start running lower profiles than this.
