Wiper motor/swich problem

I'm having problems with my new 3 speed wiper motor on my 70 barracuda. It goes on full speed when I turn it on, and uses a very long time to stop when I shut it of. It does not react on the other speed levels. I've tried two diffrent swiches, and it burned one of them, so I have disconnectet all the contacts on the swich now. The motor is new from Year One, had a 2 speed berfore, it worked, but the parking was not working on that one. Any ideas?

I have to ask, as I have a '70 too. Do you mean variable speed? My switch turns on, but then I slide it up more if I want the wipers to turn faster. I could be wrong, but I thought the 3-speed switches were after '70.  The '70 variable-speed motor will have 1077 stamped on it. I think you might be trying a variable speed motor with a 3-speed switch, and it isn't happy with it. 

   I could be totally wrong, but this is all I have now.

The swiches I have tried is 3 speed swiches. I don't know anything about the motor I have, bought it from Year One. My buddy says it's not a '70 motor.

Do you need to change any of the connections when switching from 2spd to 3 spd?  Do they use the same connectors so it is plug and play?  Maybe check the diagrams to make sure that the wiring itself is the same.

I think the connectors are the same... I've checked the diagram when I connected the this.. It should be Plug 'n Play .. at least to my knowledge..

I've burned a couple of switches too.  You just cant go from a 2 speed motor to a 3 speed or variable speed without changing wires around. I had some old pictures from a thread that another user posted last year, but they are probably long gone now.  Check the wiring diangrams in the service manual.

Read the posts on "again with the wiper questions" which is four or five postings below this one in "electrical."  As MEK said, 3-speed switches weren't around for the '70 cars, but the variable speed motor is the same motor as a 3-speed motor. The 3-speed switch has a little metal rectangular "can" attached to it with resistors in it for the different speeds .  As you probably know, the switch reverses the motor when you click it off, so that the blades "park" below the windshield.  If the motor isn't working right (or if the motor and switch aren't grounded), the motor might just click off and the blades slowly grind to a stop (anywhere). Look at the other post and see if the wires are going to the right places.  I may be wrong but I didn't think a 3-speed harness plug fit on to a variable switch or vise versa.
If you have a later model 3-sp/variable motor (with the plastic park mechanism and not the red wax flat gear box) I think you have to move a couple of the wires on the wiper motor harness (to keep the colors the same in and out of the bulkhead connector).  Read the other post about wire position.

Ok, thanks, I don't have a red wax motor, but I tougth I would get one fro Year One when I ordered a 3 speed motor for a '70

I didn't see your post asking about changing wire positions on the connectors. It's easy: just insert a nail or a very small screwdriver from the front into the notch that is between the metal female connector and the plastic housing (enough to push a little brass barb down) and pull the wire out from the back.  I think you'll have to switch two of them for your wiper motor.  Keep us posted how you're doing.

I've checked the wires now.. and the color matches on the in/out of the firewall. So ground?

The SWITCHE'S ground come from one of the 2 screws under your switch panel.  Make sure that you have both screws in and tight, then you should be okay on that end of it.

I got it to work, It was just a mather of getting the red and green wire to F1 and F2, the conecor for the 2 speed swich would not fit the 3 speed, so I had to cut that connector in two so I could get the wires to those two! Thanks All!
