clunking from drivers side rear wheel
« on: July 13, 2008 - 09:38:51 PM »
I can't figure it out.  A mild "clunking" sound that repeats when coming to a stop.  I can hear it faintly while driving but it doesn't get loud until I clutch it and coast.  It isn't just one clunk either its kind of like "Clunkaclunkaclunkaclunka..." and so on.  I can't tell if its coming from the driver side rear tire or the rearend itself.  Anyone have any ideas?  Car has to make it to gilmore in 2 weeks.

Slow clunkaclunka would be tire, wheel, brakes, wheel bearing etc.  Faster would be on the input side of the rear axle - driveshaft, u-joint etc.

The goal never changes - Stop the 60' timer with your back tires

I want to hope it is an external problem for you. But if it is not. Look at the center pin for the spider gears. I may not be saying it right. But a big diameter pin , they can start to wobble out the hole it sets in.

It has the old style bearings that need the preload adjustment.  I think we are just going to pull the pumpkin and the axles and take it to our local drivetrain shop and have them go through the whole thing ( It's over-due)
