wiring a trans brake
« on: July 13, 2008 - 10:00:28 PM »
i got a smokin deal on a 727 with a trans brake, i swapped it today and didn't realize i need to supply power to the trans brake to use reverse so we jimmy rigged one to get me mobile. my question is how do most people wire these things, i was thinkin of tappin into my backup light so i don't have to hit a switch every time i back up and have a seperate switch for 1st. i was also warned that if this gets activated while cruising the tranny will ''lock up'' and it's toast. so should i have a primary toggle and a secondary push button for safety?

When a trans brake is used ,it is usually hooked up to the delay box for activation by the delay box. I am not sure about using the N/S switch for the ground control, some of the TB solenoids can pull some amps so it might be a bit for the N/S switch.

hook it up to a momentary button and use the toggle swith to activate the momentary button .... this way the momentary button  dont work unless it has power from the toggle...

I always used a toggle to "arm" the transbrake and a button on the shifter to activate it. T handle shifter with a button on the end of the T. I used a two position switch in the ashtray or console to arm the button. Switch in the middle was "off", switched up and the button activated the line lock, switched down and the button became the transbrake. Allowed me to keep my hand on the shifter at all times. Some guys recommend a relay on the transbrake, others don't. I would think since you are using a relay anyway if you use the ground on the neutral switch it would probably work pretty good as most transbrakes are grounded an you supply the power to activate.
