How to adjust valves with a solid cam?

Having read ViperMan's Double-timing... and How do they sleep at night? posts with great interest, I wonder how do you adjust valves if you got a solid roller, or a solid mechanical cam? And how often?
What special tools is necessary?

Because of the less maintenance, I'm also considering to go hydraulic roller for my mild street 340, but if there's not much problem to adjust the valves, I might reconsider, and look at a solid roller.
I'm not having any goals of smoking anything, well, except for widing'cuda though...   :stirpot:

Once you set the valves on an engine, and it's went through the break in period, you  do not have to adjust them much other than every few months and thats a maybe. As far as adjusting valves, there is a chart by dc that helps the begginers to learn, I have my own method. Dont shy away from performance because of maintenance. It is a minor thing and you need to learn if you want to have some good power in the future.

Still, I just don't get it.  For instance:

"3rd
Once all done put a feeler guage in between the rocker tip and the spring.. use the correct lash setting per cam specs!"

I suppose you don't squeeze the feeler gauge in between the rocker tip and the spring, since the tip would squeeze the spring down, and it wouldn't make much difference measurevise, since one could use a thicker gauge and still not achieve anything else than squeezing a blade between two objects...?
...Or am I the thick one here? :clueless:

Lash setting, as in whipping settings?  :dunno:


Seems to me that I would need to see this in person, and ask as we go along. I really am that mechanically handicapped.
