Carb Suggestions?????
« on: July 24, 2008 - 08:43:20 AM »
 :newbie: :1zhelp: :canada:

I am looking to replace the carb on my 318 73 Challenger. It is as old as the hills and is giving me all kinds of troubles.
Can anyone suggest a decent replacement. (Type and size would be appreciated). It is basically a stock engine with a small cam and headers and is a weekend driver.

Thanks in advance.

Steve

I would suggest a Holley with vacuum secondaries. Something in the 600-650cfm size.

the vacuum secondary will not over carb the engine , with the mechanical carb can be forced full open

Weren't all 318's running 2 barrel carbs?  I assume that you are now using a 4barrel setup? Mopar used 800 cfm carbs on the 340/360 engines in 73/74. I like the edelbrock avs thunder 800 on my 340. Most catalogs will suggest a 600 cfm though. Who's  right Chryco?   :burnout:

most 318s used 2 bbl Except the Mexican Super Bee & some later 87 cars that had a 318 4 bbl
the 340 used a 900 CFM 6 pack with no problem , if the carb is tuned right larger carbs work , , I would use around 600 cfm with vacuum secondaries on a 318 , maybe more if the engine is highly modified

I'm running a Eddie 650 with electric choke, and I am REALLY happy with it.  Very easy to install and setup.  Runs great - especially after being graced by Chrycho Psycho's hands!

I also need a recommendation on a good replacement for my older carter AVS.  I currently have a 383 magnum(stock) engine in need of a rebuild.  I plan on building it to pretty much stock specs.  I purchased the carb new, years ago in the hopes that it would solve my problems(stumbling on acceleration and poor performance ) but it didn't.  Iam wondering if the problems were more of a result of the tired engine , low vacuum etc.?   any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The Carter AVS used on MOPAR cars for so long, was an excellent carburetor. Edelbrock now has the license to make new ones, and does so. Chrysler also used Holley carbs in 1970-71, and these worked well. There were recalls associated with them, but I think it had more to d owith the twiddling done to pass emissions, than with the way it worked. The Thermoquad was great, because it flowed 800 CFM, and wouldn't over-carb an engine, and had that way cool spreadbore design. As with all carburetors, the real issues arise not from the brand of carb chosen, but from misguided attempts to tune them, using incorrect procedures, or improper parts. I like Holley, but love the T-quad. You can even use a Rochester Quadrajet, if you want. My 1985 Dodge van had one, and it was fine. Yes, it was factory-installed. Carter folded in 1984, and Chrysler still needed carburetors. They went to Rochester.

Welcome aboard here.

Is your carb a 2, or 4 barrel? What did you have originally, and what did you replace it with? I would guess your carb needed tuning, not your engine. Even with a tired engine, you shouldn't be stumbling. Just re-acting slowly, and not having a great top end...I would think. Your vacuum shouldn't be low unless you have put a big cam in it. Maybe this is a problem with the spark plugs, and wires?
