Hey Chrycho - Proform 950 DP?
« on: July 24, 2008 - 11:43:19 AM »
Neil,

You had suggested in some earlier posts that the Holley Proform 950 DP Carburetor was as good as it gets for a high displacement engine.

I was doing just some very basic research into the Proform DP and quickly noticed that it is listed as a "race carburetor" with no choke control or otherwise.

I just wondered if this is really what I want for a 505ci "driver" car.  Granted I won't be driving it in the winter so choke is only of marginal concern, but I won't necessarily be racing with this engine.

Do you (or anyone else) have any other suggestions?  Is 850cfm too little for the engine I'm planning to build?  There seem to be a lot more options in the 850cfm category of carburetors.

I use a lot of the 950 Proform carbs , with 500 ci I would use 2x the ci so around 1000 cfm , the Proform is extremely drivable , starts easily , you need to nurse it for about 1 min when cold to keep it running after that it is no issue with no choke
73E stroker & 4C are both running them

Any idea what the difference between these two are?  The first is from "Spider," the second is Holley's...

totally different carbs , the Prform has the billet base & metering blocks
the second is the Holley with typical Holley features
the Proform is Chaeper with better parts & seems to respond better IMO

Is the Spider carb the "Proform?" I thought Proform was Holley's brand name...

dominators are a better choice , just less choice of intake & air cleaners

How much "better" do you consider the dominator to be and what is the average price difference between similarly performing units?

well the dominator I had on my 40 outperformed every other carb I tried on it & picked the car up .2 or better in the 1/4 & was far more drivable but this was before the HP series carbs like the Proform & Holley that are superior to the previous carbs available so the advantage may be less now ,you will pay a $300 premium for a dominator & you need a different intake & air cleaner so the cost is more yet

Eh I think I'll stick with the proform.

By the way, CP you didn't answer my question - the "Spider" carb I pictured above (the purple one) - is that the "Proform?"  That's what their website says, so I have to assume "yes."
