Where and how many E-body's
« on: November 30, 2001 - 01:43:50 PM »
First E-Body I owned is the one I still have. I bought her in 1987 From a friend named Rich, he owned Mid Amercia Mopar at the time. When I meet him in 1985 he was impreesed by the fact I had got my 1968 Road Runner when I was 17(Mon and Dad got her new) I had owned her for 16 year's then and still have her.

Rich had just redone my Cuda (it was his then he got her when he was 15) But was looking to sell her so he could do his 69 Hemi Bee that ha got when he was 14. Well I was hang out there a lot and one day to guy's came in looking to buy a Charger. Rich showed what he had at the time and the guy's where not impressed. Now I knew Rich was looking to sale his Cuda and she was sweet. I asked Rich if I could tell them about my 69 Charger (#2 of 3) that had no engine in it, he said ok. I told the guy's about it and they wanted a look at her.

Well they meet me at my shop. The Charger had just had the engine bay painted and most of the car was painted as well, had one quater to finshe then she was painted. The money guy like the car and gave me $5000 there on the spot. 69 383 auto with air and not much rust repair. Should have kept. ::)

Well Rich had told me he would let me have the Cuda for $5000 (that was a steal I had $10,000 in cash waved at me about 3 week's after I bought her but was not for sell) if I promised him one thing. He knew I was not a car of the month guy after owing the Runner for 16 year's. When it was time to sell it I would give him the first crack at it, deal and she was mine.

I want a driver so he pulled the 12 point cage out of her and the nasty 383 that was runing 11.8's and built me a fresh 383 for her and redid the inside's for me. Still would run 14.8 at a trap speed of 98 mph, to bad she would not hook up at the track. With good small slick's she would have been hitting 13.35 but she was the fastest car in the bleach box.

Second e-body was what I thought was a 1973 Challanger, I was wrong. Saw the car sitting in the back yard for some time, oh 2 year's or so. No hood, engine, seat's was in brown rattle can primer and all 4 tire's where flat and looked like     s--t. One day I saw a 4-sell written on the glass so I stopped by. The guy said it was his son's car but had passed away in a car wreck about 10 year's ago. He was going to fix it up but never did. He did not have a title but that was no big deal to me, I just do the ALB title thing.

I bought the car for $500 but he did not know where the part's had gone but it was not a big deal to me as I knew where to get what I needed. Now I am not a # guy's so pleases under stand I had no clue as to what it was. The engine bay had so much crude bulit up from sitting I did not even look at the fender's tag.

I knew the car had been piced toghter at one point, rear end had 73-74 tail light's and front had 70 front fender's no big deal. I got the car home where Jim and I started stripping the car to be redone. I was under the car pulling the Hum 727 small block 727 when Jim said Hey Ken when did they stop using Panther Pink? I saided 71 why? Jim asked what year is this car? I said 73 why? Well Jim asked why is it panther pink under the carpet then? Hum, went to look and it was Hum. The tail lights where 73-74? Popped the trunk and yep she had been hit hard at one time. The rear 1/4 had been cut 18" forward and a new rear end had been section in, must have been a high hit from a 4X4 as the trunk floor had no majoir wrinkles in it and frame rail's looked untouched.

I knew there was two date plate's but never washed the stuff off of then, I did then. Jim was gabbing the decodeing book when I cleand the s--t off. The second one sayed TRAM's AM.
Egine code was J, yes the big J. I had bought a 1970 Challanger T/A remain's for $500.00. I was told I had over payed, right.

I hate to say it but I sold it, I did not have the money to do the car right. 340 T/A engine that need a rebulid was $3500 and the manafolid's where going for $1500-$2000 a pair. Not to think about the other part's that where need like 6-pack. Sold the car for $6500 and the guy spent $30,000 to make her right. I see the car now and then at show's. I was looking at her at a show wishing I had the fund's to keep her. A guy walked over to me and asked me if it was my car, I said not anymore I sold her and just walked a way shaking my head.

I have had two other e-body's but that's part two.

I don`t know if I can remember all the E bodies I have had , the 3rd vehicle I ever owned was a 70 R/T Challenger 440 4spd back in 77 paid $1200 & it came with a complete spare drivetrain , I sold it 1 year later for 3x times the $$ & missed it so much I bought the 70 R/T SE 440 4spd that I still have & have owned at least 4 others!! I have also helped restore dozens more!!

My 3rd E-body was a 72 Challanger. I was kicking my self in the butt for selling the T/A that I decide to bulid a clone. I bought the running and rusted to hell car from Rich for $500. The car was a 318 that had a 4 barrel and header's on it. Boy she was a rust bucket.

Got her home and pulled the inside's out and had the seat's re done. Refinsher the door panel's and all the trim, and pulled the motor. This car had to been owned by Fred and Barnney. The floor's where so bad I undid the collecter's from in side the car :P The car had rust ever where there was metal. Inner fender where needing to replaced, floor pan's, trunk floor, quaters wheel well tube's. What final killed the car was when I found the cowling was also rusted out. That was it off to the beer can heaven for this one. I called Rich up(he did tell me not to buy the car) and told him he was right and come to get the pice's of s--t.

2 Day's later he showed up with his wrecker to get it. On the hook there was an nother Challanger, now how's he getting this one out of here if he already had one on the hook. Hum?
He was dropping the one he brought and I ask what he was doing? He said unloading your Challanger. ??? What? Well I am giving you this one inexhange for the other one. I asked how much, he said for nothing. Now Rich is pretty smart, he know's if Iam buliding one I would buy all the part's from him. He was the only places I shopped at, so he could sell the car for $500 or give it to me knowing I would spend $5000 on part's and labor on stuff I would not do. Pretty smart guy. ;)

This one was a lot better, floors, inner fenders, cowling where rust free, truck was save able and came with a T/A spolier(he did charge me $35.00 for it). All she need was quater's and I already had them for the other car. I painted the engine compartment, painted the jam's Panther Pink like the one I let get away. Hung the quater's and insalled the 70 marker light's front and rear. Replaced the dash pad and put in the seat's and panel's. Boy it looked like 1970 in there again.

Jamie (friend) insalled a new timing chain and we did a spray can rebulid on the 318. Dropped it in and tryed to fire it up, would not hit, Hum. I checked the spark, had that, check for fuel, we did not have that. Fuel pump must have went out, so off to Auto Zone we go. Insalled the fuel pump and for some reason it was really easy to install. Crank over the engine again and still no fuel? Pourd 5 gallon's in the tank to be on the save side and still no fuel. Jamie want to start pulling the gas line, must have something in it. I said, no let's stick a hoses on the pump and stick that in a gas can. Still no fuel? Hum

Went to where Jamie had did the timing chain and asked him What's This? Jamie looked at it and said he did not know but it was on the gear but did not think we needed it. Well it was the fule pump drive. I started to laugh and Jamie looked sick(he was 18 then) He asked me why I was laughing? That's easy, you are going to but it in.

Car ran great after that little mix up, never did tell him I left the drive rod out of my first B/B rebulid. Jamie and I had some fun doing that car toghter. I did wind up selling him the car as I only had room to keep three inside but he's afriend and I still get to play with anytime I want to. Best of both world's I still have key's to it and he flipp's the bill when something break's. ;D

Welcome to the board 70 Chally!  i love challengers.  infact my father tried to convince me to get a challenger instead of the charger.  were now both happy with the charger decision, but were looking into getting a good project challenger.   sounds like you found a good deal.

8)My first car at 16 (1978) was a 1970 Challenger. Man did I put the money in that. Almost every pay check was eaten up buying parts. (wheels, tires headers, carb, manifold,etc.....). Loved that car but as fate would have it, I center punched a tree with it and  bent both front frame rails. Sold the engine and tranny to a local guy who had a 1970 Challenger rt with a blown 383. Eventually I bought his car (with my engine in it) for the same price as I sold him my combo for ! Later I bought a 1973 Challenger Rallye with a  318 cid. This car was a very solid car and I loved the (FY1) TOP BANANA color with the strobe stripes. We completly stripped the car to bare bones and started over. Painted original color but dropped in a built 440 cid. I still own this car and have participated in all the "CHRYSLER" shows at Carlisle,PA.,even managed to get a 2nd and two 3rd places. The fourth Challenger I own is a 1970 convertible that is presently on hold until I win the lottery ! Car has been disassembled and sand blasted. I have collected most of the needed parts, including both rear frame rails. Thinking of taking her to "TOTALLY AUTO" which specializes in restoring MOPARS to get the body work and paint done. That's it for now but always looking for a project car for my 9 yr old son.

I bought a 70 Challenger from a junk yard when I was 19.  Had that car for about 10 years.  It was nothing special, just a slightly modified 318 with a 4-speed (changed it from an auto).  Sold it several years ago.

Recently bought a 73 Challenger that I am fixing up.  It is a 360 auto with a fairly straight body.  I am slowly going thru it and fixing things like gauges, windows, lights, etc.  Plan to put a built 360 in it and get it painted.  Work on it is slow but it is comming along.

My current E body is a 74 Rallye.  My first, back in 87, was a standard 318 car.
My 74 has been down for almost 20 months now.  Engine compartment is done, but I still have a qtr to finish plus some work to do on the fenders.
When done, it will be back to the original G8 Deep Sherwood in a PPG base/clear, black vinyl top, and the Rallye strobes.  But the strobes are going to be "ghosted in".
Power is by 440/727/3.91, 484 cam, 1.6 rockers and 2500 stall.

This one is my husband's brother's ("AKCuda"), but since he lives across the country, we keep it in the driveway for him.  He gets to enjoy it when he comes to visit.  He's had it since I've been a member of the family ... a good decade or so.  The lime green sure makes the heads turn ... just can't miss it going down the road.  Has really low rear-end gears, tho ... 45 mph down the highway ... ugh!  But it also has a 440.  ;D

I personally prefer B-bodies, but that's just because of my dangerous style of driving, mostly in winter.   8)  E-bodies (like 69 Camaros, I've noticed), I tend to spin.  :o  But a 68 Charger with snow tires ... heck, I can bring that puppy sideways and still be in control.  :D
