Noob here. Help me ID this burnt junkyard Challenger/engine.

Been looking for an engine for the '71 D100 peekup I got for a Ch3vy fender.

I tried scraping at the bar bolted on with 3 bolts by the distrib and didn't find anything, but it was uber crusty.

I know it's a BB - distributor.

How do I go about checking to see what condition it's in and how much do I offer?

Can i get a compression reading turning it over by hand? I've always used the starter.

Looks like just the carb/top burned on the engine. Power steering pump and down is oily.  I didn't see anything on the 3 bolt strip or the little pad on the block by it. I was thinking that's where the numbers were on the burned motorhome 413 I had. Need to go back with some sandpaper. Also need to snap a pic of the front so I can figger the year. I don't mind getting parts for people. Pretty burnt tho. Looks like it went from the carb thru the rest of the car. The curved piece of glass on the fender was the wing window.

The VIN was incinerated.

Where is that at? You might also want to look if it has the fender tag on the drivers side inner fender.

Looks like a 383 to me.

  does look like a 383 plus I doubt a person would have put a 440 in there without changing the hood.

Look at the casting number on the driver's side of the block.

Look for the partial body VIN on the radiator support & cowl too.

Oh, forgot...the valve covers say ERSON...never heard of them.

The valve covers have me thinking. I wonder if someone just put them on there 'cuz they were shiny, or if the engine is built....hmmmm

I doubt that engine is built. Cast intake no headers, look at the breather

What's the rest of the tag mean? H and the H2?  The 11 9 the date code?
