how much importance do you put on the #'s matching?

Lets say you found a car like you have been wanting, options, type, etc, but engine/tranny dont match is only thing you dont like. Would you let that hold you back? How much value does that take away? Owner says he 'knows' where the matching #'s tranny is (in his brother's cuda lol) and could let it go if needed, but engine is in a motorhome he sold a while back. DOH!

If you are buying a car to sell then it matters. Me, I couldn't care less.

Since we don't know the year or car you are talking about.. It only seems the numbers matching stuff matters with big blocks, or 70-72 340's.


  If this was a 318 car, or slant-six, I wouldn't sweat it.

i think if the cars got all the right stuff it probably will have more value than a matching lesser desirable model .that said the cooler the car the less likely a match also.look at the car as a package .look at the prices on clones and originals the prices dont very much i look at ebay and see cars close in price and non match cars that have good color or shakers or even multiple options do very well some times better than a match .if you could pick your dream car the odds of finding more than one for sale   could be elusive ,this means you cant compare a match or non match to each other or how could you settle on a value .i guess my point is cool sells .see ya

Non-matching numbers is not something that would hold me back   I agree with the earlier post - a cool car, especially a 440, I think retains great value either way.  If we were talking about a real 427 cobra next to a kit cobra, well then there's an issue.

If you are buying a car to sell then it matters. Me, I couldn't care less.

If you are building it just to make a profit, then yes the numbers matching stuff might bring a higher price.  If you are building it to be a car for yourself, then build it the way you want it and don't look back.

Only you can answer this question. Does it, or would it, bother you that you car isn't running it's original factory engine? Yes? Then don't buy it. You know it will bug you and yes the question pops up all the time: "Is it a #'s matching car?" If it doesn't bother you the by all means buy it. Great options with a 4-speed 440ci big block in a desirable year 'Cuda. If you are after a show piece then a #'s will help you drop draws and grab trophy's. If you are after a car you can drive more without worrying (I have a #'s a drive it) but some prefer "non #s vehicles" as they aren't as valuable so less money to worry about going up in smoke if something does happen on the blacktop. Buy what makes you happy and post photos when you do!!

If you are buying it with the intent to one day sell then it may very well matter. Now are you buying it because you like the car then go for it. The car holds a certain value no matter what because of what it is. Personally when these cars were a lot cheaper (years ago) I never gave a crap if it was numbers matching and I am not going to start now.  Buy the car if you like it and enjoy it.

I suggest if your buying the car to drive it, it really doesn't matter. buy it and drive it. thats what they were made for!

...all thru the years, I never strayed from "numbers matching" except in a couple of cars...the two cars I had that were non numbers matching were so rare, there weren't any better examples of them period....

Buy it,  after all it is an original 440 car.  Put what you want in it and just try to get the original numbers engine from the current owner.  I would try to put it back  to original if it is possible but otherwise no big deal.  440 cars hold their value even without the original motor.
