Another Canadian Newbie
« on: July 27, 2008 - 10:27:17 PM »
Hey, I'm from Calgary AB - I stumbled upon this site while looking for info on Challengers and decided to stick around.
I don't have an E-body yet but I'm looking for a good project challenger - probably a clone due to budget (I'm 18)

If anyone has any advice on finding project e-bodies or any ideas on what a complete restoration for a clone would cost - I would be very greatful for more information and advice.

Well, I guess I'll see everyone around the site.

Welcome.
Prices vary from very low to very high.  I purchased a challenger for 1500.00 last year.  It needed lots of metal work and I do mean lots.  If you are willing to do the work you can find very reasonable prices.  Cuda's are a little more pricey than challengers but deals are had all the time.

Hi and welcome to the site. There are project Challengers for sale all the time and a restoration cost will depend on how much you can do yourself and what kind of restoration you want. Stick around and enjoy all this site has to offer.

My dad and I paid $3800 for my 71 Challenger a year ago and it needs trunk pan, extensions, quarters, floor pan, new trunklid, plus many patch pieces, and I am cloning it also. We feel that if we only spend about $10,000 including the price of the car to get it running and looking nice then we did our jobs well. And im only 16.

I forgot to ask also - does anyone know any good places to look for project cars? (preferable in Canada)
If I ever find a good deal I want to make sure it wasn't a crash car.

Welcome to the site!  If you want to make a very, very clean weekend driver, I'd expect to pay around $20,000 in total.  I purchased my '73 several years back at the age of 17 (now 22) and have around $10,000 into it as it sits.  Figure in another $5,000 for engine/transmission work, about another $3,000-3,500 into interior parts, and another $4,000 (at a discount) for the final prep/paint and I'll have a very nice, clean car for ~$22,000.  The best advice I can give you from experiencing it first hand is to take your time and do things right the first time, rather than slap everything together quickly and have to put more time and effort into fixes later on.  Best of luck with your E-body search and as already mentioned, good purchases can be found.  I found mine listed in a local paper for $2,000 and ended up purchasing it for $1,750 after seeing it.

Welcome. The more work that you can do - or learn to do - yourself, they cheaper it is. I have done almost everything myself on my baby. Granted, it has taken 15+ years, three states (Idaho, Alaska, and Texas) and two foreign countries (South Korea and Germany). Plus I have had to do things over after I figured out I did it worng, but it has been fun. Plus I have all the knowledge to do it better the next time. Good luck on the search.

welcome aboard. good to see another young guy getting into this. i started with an old ford, but i know the pains of money at that point. just remember that a wrecking yard can be a gold mine and do not always shoot for the stars. for a nice cruiser now, you dont have to have a 440+6 4 speed dana 60 with all the bells and whistles. if you can get her on the road, reliable, and work things slowly, later can come the mods and getting closer to what you really want. like MrMopar440 said, 15+ years. Ask many questions while you stick around here. there is more knowlege here than i could have ever expected.

Junkyards in Canada would be a better place to look for a project than in a junkyard in the US, most of the good junkyards are gone now because of all the emissions crap. I see great e-body junkyards in Canada online all the time.
And you will save a lot of money if you do most of the work yourself. :working:

Welcome to cc.com!  This is a good place to looks for a project car.  Our Tech adviser Chryco Physco is located in Calgary also and may have a line on a challenger.  I would drop him a note!   :grinyes:
