Functional Cuda Ralleye Hood Scoops?

    Functional Cuda Ralleye Hood Scoops?

    Just sitting here staring at the wall thinking about color options for my Cuda (you old Muscle Car guys are ALL about your factory color codes, aren't you??) and I suddenly got to thinking about taking the inserts in the ralleye hood scoops and removing them, replacing them with some screens (painted dark so as not to be visible) and letting them feed air into the top of, oh, I dunno, a 505 cubic inch stroker...

    Anyone ever do this?  I want to say that behind the inserts is just more steel, but that could be cut out without much difficulty - I can't imagine that it's needed for structural rigidity - the openings aren't that large.  Then maybe just install a flap behind them to guide air to the filter...

    Thoughts?

    Does anyone have pictures of the underside of these hoods without fire-material attached?  I must admit I've never seen the underside of my hood because I have a large sheet of fire-proofing material.

    there is another thread started about 2 weeks ago , but yes it is possible & should have been done at the factory , I have done 2 hoods

    I did this on my 72 'cuda in Germany and have also done it on my present 73 'cuda.  I used just regular screen wire.  I am in process of building a RAM air box so as to direct the air directly into the filter...

    Dug this one out of its grave  :sleeping:  to ask you if you had some pictures of what you did to make the scoops functional.  I want to do this to my '73 'Cuda and I'm looking for ideas for directing air flow to the filter.

    vents are mounted to low to get a ram air effect

    The benefit is, if your air cleaner is on fire and you're driving in a rainstorm, the rain pouring in will put out the fire.

    They were smart by adding a control to open and close the door to the shakers and Ram Air assemblies.

    Yup, does absolutely ZERO for performance.  There is this thing called the "Boundary Layer" of air that sits on the surface of the hood.  The fast moving air actually flows over this boundary layer.  So if anything is pulls air out of the engine compartment (still a plus) because of the low pressure zone it creates.

     :clueless: So then, in effect, the negative air pressure in the engine compartment would cause air to draw in through the grille, thus decreasing the resistance in front of the car? Bonus!!!  :burnout:  :icon16:

    The guy that I bought my Challenger from made the scoops functional by making doors that open via a vacuum motor controlled by a switch on the dash, pretty cool I think.  Matt

    My Challenger hood had the inserts out and the guy cut off the legs to hold them in, So I can't close them unless I replace my scoops.  They do line up to my snorkel air cleaner though so they look functional.

    I have a Cuda hood somebody used a can opener to open the scoops ,

    and yes it got the engine wet right above the alternator and of course you know what happened after that so

     NO PLEASE dont cut the hood,like it was said before they dont work anyway :villagers:
