I went through a local company here in Texas for my title company.  It consisted of putting down a bond that is a % of the total worth of the vehicle.  When I first looked the value of the vehicle had to be "appraised" value.  Then a few months later a new law took effect where they used the "good" NADA value of the vehicle no matter the condition of the vehicle.  The title company told me to wait if I wasn't in a hurry since they (and other title companies) were protesting the law.  They ended up getting it repealed and it went back to "appraised" value.  I ended up forking over a 150 dollar bond and 100 for their fees and got a bonded title.  Then went to get the title and got hit with taxes for the vehicle to the tune of about 450 dollars.  Don't know what the law is in your area, but if funds are limited you may want to double check to make sure of these "hidden" costs associated with obtaining the missing title.

Has anyone bought a car off of ebay?  Is it fairly safe?

I bought a new one with no problems. Buying a older car would require you or another party to inspect it to be totally safe. Usually, someone on this site would ask if anyone was within the area of the car you are looking to buy. Then they could look at it for you.

I got my 71 Challenger off ebay and I didn't see it in person and was very happy with the car and the guy who sold it was a nice person to talk to, My dad bought a passat and explorer off ebay and had no problems at all. But who knows how it might turn out.

I have only bought one car sight unseen and that was from a classic car dealership in nevada.  I received a car that was exactly as described and when I went through (removed all interior) I was very happy with my purchase.
